Well now... Just did some thread clean up....I'd much rather read the posts and enjoy 'em with my morning coffee , then have to delete a bunch of 'em.
Lets all play nice and remember rule #1 Be excellent to each other...
Thank you...
Andy

I was a Chemical Weapons Technical Escort in the Army. That means I moved chemical weapons and tactical nukes around a lot . I was also trained in fallout prediction, blast areas etc. to brief the commanders at battalion level where to put up sites, decon etc.
If the united States is attacked by a small player with limited nuclear weapons capacity it will not be after strategic targets like the Sub Base or Hanford and to be honest I dont think it will be targeted towards any military installations at all. San Francisco or L.A. are highest on the list for top population targets on the West Coast. The topography of the NW makes smaller weapons strikes difficult. Sure, you could wipe out Seattle proper in one strike but the mountain deflect a lot of the damage and would keep the damage contained to a smaller area. Same thing with Portland.
For maximum damage with a limited arsenal you'd want to train your weapons towards Californias major population centers and then await the reprisals..

the thing about SHTF situations is everyone puts aside their political differences because everyone needs each other. Some liberal anti gunner is going to have a skillset that you need to survive, and suddenly they might need your gun skillset to survive the looters. Everyone puts down their differences and works together, talking about killing others over political differences is wrong.

heres a fun interactive map that shows the blast zone radius for Portland for various different types of nukes. Just select a NOKO nuke from the pulldown , your city, select 'detonate' and the kill zone will update, including the estimated deaths and injuries...

That is a great map and link koda!! I gotta tell ya I played around with different ones. Some of those would be scary as hell to live through.

Thanks Andy.
Seems that when it comes to contemplating the aftermath of a nuke attack...
.... folks can sometimes tend to make "ashes" of themselves.;)

I would hope you are right about working together, it's going to be a difficult time if it ever happens. I doubt NK will nuke us, it would be suicide for them as a country. They need to send those charts and graphs of each NK city so they will understand how many will die if we strike back.o_O

Worst case we lose LA and San Francisco before the retaliatory strike. Meh....

Our A.D.A. capabilities are going to get outed and I think that a lot of people will be surprised.

I personally don't think Portland would get hit. If they are going for strategic locations they are going to hit the Seattle area first. If you think about it they have Boeing, Everett naval station, Sub base in Banger and whidbey Is air station. After that it would probably move to California like San Diego!

A strike by North Korea wouldn't be against strategic interests. Whats the point? You would only use very limited resources like that again major population areas. It would be more of a terrorist attack than anything that would accomplish a strategic goal. A stroke by China or Russia to disable the ability to strike back would be different but you need a huge arsenal to do that.

Totally agree on that! If anyone is dumb enough to pull the trigger he is. On the bright side we would never have to worry about NK as we would just annihilate them!!

My question is just how good is our missle defense system? I understand its not very reliable.
If NK attacks, yeah were gonna retaliate and NK is gonna lose big time.... But who wins the war doesnt mean anything to me if im dead from radiation.

It depends on how big his arsenal is. Portland is lower on the list of targets but its also closer to NK....

IOW, if his arsenal is really smaller and weaker than hes bragging, Portland and Seattle might be the only targets he can reach.

Which is why I think his first target would be Seattle area. There are to many strategic points up north for him if he wants to make a statement. I really hope he is not that stupid.

I think planning for the earthquake is a better use of time. With a nuke you have 15-20 minutes before it hits. With the earthquake you get zero warning. Plan for 2 weeks of being stuck at home with no services. you need water, food, heating or cooking ability, protection from looters and those who did not plan.

If you got a 15 minute warning for a nuke in Portland just imagine all the panic on the highways. You'll be microwaved in your car like a TV dinner with the rest of them. There is no escape plan for that unless you want to start digging a tunnel out of town.

Amazon sells #10 mountain house cans. Do what I did an order one can every few months regularly. They last 30 years so they will outlive me. Get a few life straws at $20 each. You can drink straight from sewage with those things if you needed to. hundred hour candles are cheep as well.

For a $100 a person you can be minimally prepared for at least 3 days. Preparing over time reduces the sticker shock of what to buy.

Honalulu is much closer to him and easier to hit. IF he guns for west coast, who knows. Hes not the greatest tactician, and he'd be cutting his own throat.

I kind of doubt the US would even retaliate with nukes against a limited NK nuke attack. Our friends Japan and SK are too close. I do foresee just about every conventional missle in the Pacific headed his way though, along with every ship, sailor, soldier and airman.

Then again how good is that arsenal. If he uses ground burst he will create grate dust clouds of radiation blown in the wind to contaminate a wide area. If he air burst at 1000 feet it will be a powerful shock with fire but far less contaminate. From what they say he hasnt' figured out re entry with a warhead yet. I don't think we as the public know enough to figure out the future but I just can't see a nuke comming this way very soon.

This!

...also preparing for whatever one deems to be a worse case scenario (earthquake, fire, flood, whathave you..), allows one to be prepared for any number of less catastrophic interruptions in life which occur "routinely" (power outage, severe storms, etc).

Should one become more concerned of a different "worse case" scenario (ie very long term type event-economic collapse, etc etc), it becomes relatively easy to build upon ones initial stores & proccesses.
