Hello, i just joined today and was told this would be a good place to post this. I've been a Civil War junkie since 5th grade, and over the course of the last couple of years, I was able to rebuild an entire setup for this Civil War battle-worn Manhattan Navy revolver. Some parts are original, some are new remanufactured. Includes an original .36 bullet mold, powder flask from a .28 caliber Colt revolver, several battlefield-dug .36 bullets, and I also tossed in several coat buttons from artillery, infantry, and even musician's uniforms. The soldier's name (Mat Coulter) is carved in the handle and has been traced to Matthew Coulter of the 30th Illinois Infantry Regiment, Company E. Born 12/22/1848. Enlisted 2/8/1864 @ 15 years old. Mustered in 4/9/1864 @ Camp Butler, IL, mustered out 7/17/1865 @ Louisville, KY, 16 years old. Became a lawyer after the war and died 7/7/1890 @ 41 years old. As an Infantry private, he would have been responsible for purchasing his own sidearm.

The new school rifle. Single lug, smooth bore and one-piece stock. The cartouche translates into 佐原青年学校 = Sawara Youth School. PAX

I haven't looked really close, the receiver serial is 51844, there's 2 digits on the front TG tang that I can't make out, no numbers on the bolt handle. And this rack number. PAX

RE : Post #707 and my other Springfield 1903 pics.....

She (the Springfield 1903) has been out of service for a while. After I bought her at a Battleground, WA gunshow, I was so happy to have her join my other bolt action rifles. But, after my first range trip......well, the happiness ended. You see, I was having a hard time extracting the spent cases. Rrrrright..... It's NOT NORMAL, to have to use that much FORCE just to open the bolt. Yes, after firing, I even noticed a slight bulge to the cartridge case's body (I couldn't see it, though I felt it). I guess the chamber was BUGGERED. So, I decided that I needed a new barrel.

Project Time.
With a bit of research, I found that CMP had some new Criterion barrels at a very reasonable price. Call it $200 at that time (Oct. 2023). With the help of the guys at the Clark Rifle Inc. I found a local Vancouver, WA gunsmith and turned over all of the parts to him for the job. It only took a day and I was very happy with that timing. YUP.....right in time for the weekend.

So today, 01-27-2024, was the day of reckoning. Immediately, I noticed/could tell the difference after the first shot. The bolt opened and closed smoothly and more importantly after firing, opening the bolt was an easy task. No more using that short length of 2"x4" to persuade the bolt handle to open. LOL.

But it's the truth. Someone with a Mosin Nagant rifle, might know about that one. How do you think I found out about that trick? Rrrrright..... Anyway, on with the shooting.

Factory ammo. In his case, it'll be with some surplus Greek HXP, non-corrosive, reloadable/boxer primer, M2 spec ball ammo made for the M1 Garand.



I fired off three (3) for a group. 25 yds, iron sights (more about that LATER). I was impressed.



Made it a ten (10) shot group. Yeah.....happy, happy, joy, joy.



Ooops.....did I mention that I brought a new toy along (a Garmin XERO C1 PRO chronograph).



The weather was cold and wet, though I didn't let that spoil my day. My last three (3) shot group was this one. Yeah.....I ran out of ink.





BTW. Do I need to see a doctor......I mean......about that "Bent Carrot"?



Iron Sight Comments.
Yeah, that aperture. That hole, is soooo.....small. And, that front sight is soooo.....thin. It was very difficult with my old eyes to get a clear sight picture. Lucky for me.....it was only at 25 yards. BTW.....my rear sight was set for about 425 yards.

And, I was having a bit of difficulty with getting the windage to stay put. I really tried to crank down that locking knob. But, it wouldn't hold for more than about three (3) rounds. Next time, I'll have to remember to bring pliers with me. Or maybe, the parts will need to be changed out.



Or maybe, it's time to SELL her? Yeah.....trying to see the sights was that difficult for me.

It's a Finnish M39. So then.....I shot 20 rounds of Russian Lt surplus (silver tip) ball at 25 yards, rear iron sights, set for 500 yards.



Yeah.....all that shooting and I still couldn't manage to hit the "sweet spot".
