I was watching this yesterday. I've heard that story from Remi Warren who was with them and on Steve's podcast in depth.
all I can say is his brain probably didn't process it, since his back was to the bear, the bear was probably blown through and half way down the hill before his brain acknowledged what was happening.

If you haven't heard the in depth story it's worth finding.

but still a good reminder, you can practice all you want, mother nature is still in charge.
It's all luck and happen stance.
