Those fools passed up on even TESTING the M9A3. More for me, losers.

Has anyone who has a say in this fight , talked to the guys who might have to use said pistol?
You know like in combat , in the worst of conditions.
Maybe asked what they want and need?

The GI's who are stuck with the decisions that folks make , who have never been there or don't have to go there , take the consequences of those decisions.
Sometimes with fatal results.

Beretta took every concern by ground troops who carried and used the M9 daily, and made the appropriate changes for the M9A3. Army wouldn't even accept sample pistols.

#1) It's a Sig, so it will have loads of Germanic charm.
#2) The plastic in it is biodegradable so we save the planet.
#3) Americans don't make any good pistols: Buy European!
(One or more of the above may just be false...)

Doesn't meet MHS standards (why it got insta-rejected)
Expensive
Heavy
Long
Doesn't have adjustable grip size
Slide mounted safety/decocker

They pretty much ignored everything that was happening in the industry innovation wise and what the military requested as it pertained to serializing and said "nawwww, you want to keep buying the same thing". M9 is a cool looking gun with a lot of history and for a lot of people it is a perfect fit for their body and the role they are looking for it to fill, but the military is a big organization with a bunch of different people doing a bunch of different things.

In the 80s the M9 was selected because it was Italy's "turn" to have a major arms contract awarded to them. This time I guess it was Germany's "turn" as half owner of the Swiss/German Sig Sauer. Don't worry, it will be America's "turn" again sometime in the 22nd Century...

They could ditch sidearms alltogether, and look at replacing the aging Stoner designed rifle with something better, even if that better is an updated version of the stoner design, or adopt two rifles - one for standard infantry, and another SBR/PDW for rear echelons, tanker crews, mortarmen, etc. Keep one standard caliber, and one magazine standard - if it's 5.56mm so be it. But get a really compact SBR for the guys who need a gun in tight quarters, and one not as small for the guys who need to be able to reach out and touch someone. The weight of the sidearm and ammo for it could be replaced by say, 2 or 3 extra rifle mags, an extra IFAK, candy bars, porno mags, or whatever else a soldier may need in the field other than a pistol.

Hard to throw away the idea of a sidearm.

They fill a niche that I don't think rifles ever will. It's always faster to switch to a sidearm than to clear a malfunction with a rifle (malfunctions include running out of ammo). Pistols also work well for certain security positions and in awkward close quarter combat. Imagine running through a small ship, checking under weird hidy places/tight places, popping up through a small hatch, etc. I would agree rifles fill 99% of the roles of force escalation but there will always be a place for a pistol.

Expensive - Never got far enough in the discussion to get a military unit price out of Beretta. They certainly weren't got to pay retail! I paid $799 for mine locally, NIB from an FFL.
Heavy - weighs precisely the same as the M9
Long - They wanted a threaded barrel, so...
Doesn't have adjustable grip size - It does though. I don't think they want a few dozen plastic backstraps for grunts to lose.
Slide mounted safety/decocker - It DOES have this. You can configure it to a decocker only from the factory "decocker safety" configuration. Mine came with the G kit, but since I trained so extensively with the F configuration, I leave mine stock for carry.

It's not about the Beretta failing to meet criteria. It's about people in congress, and some B holes at the pentagon looking to justify their position and get their name on a contract to justify their next promotion. The Issues that soldiers, and airman had with the M9 were addressed, and fixed by Beretta. Threaded barrel, vertec grip, night sights, safety levers swept upwards to act as a charging handle. It's an awesome gun, and would serve as admirably for the next 30 years. Just like the M9 has.
