Jake, I think the issue might be that while you are else where, someone else shares with the police that you might have a few firearms, and while you are out of it, they swoop in and get into your private space, even if its your car outside.
I care deeply for the police, and hope for their well being, having been on the job in my lifetime.
Still, does not matter if i am out for a heart attack or in the drunk tank.
I know a mako shark of a lawyer, who also loves firearms owners.
