I wish I had a dollar for every hunting shot I passed on 'cause of very little or nothing that made for a backstop...Can't imagine "plinking" without a backstop...
My Dad and Grandad would come back from the grave and give me a whupping if I did that...

Aren't there signs, on the gate, on the trees, by the side of the road, to warn people off of shooting in the vicinity? Especially after the encounter last year. I would assume that if you stumble on this behavior twice in the year that people probably shoot there fairy regular?

There was a gate near Slide Mtn on Peavine Rd (W of McMinnville); people used to shoot there even though there wasn't a backstop..Gopher Valley Rd was is in the direct line of fire.

Since then, the landowner has posted the area and I've noticed only a few instances of hulls or brass on the ground.

It took a couple years after I moved-in for people to figure out my land was private and the signage meant something; some were even argumentative; trying to claim their right to trespass because of previous years...BS!

A person must be on their guard at all times these days.

The perps seeing and or hearing their license plate # and descriptions being sent over the phone or radio usually sets them in the proper mode...that's the first thing I let them see and hear me doing...while I'm at "the ready".

This is sad- I grew up in this area and remember when ronco was a thru road and connected to the main line valsetz rd near cold springs- the gate at the bottom has been in place for what ? over 25 years now ? most older locals like myself show the proper respect to this area -

what gets me is if they just turn left up bald mt rd (aka 1500 mainline?) a mile below they could head up and find much better and safer areas on BLM to target shoot on and its not much more of a drive.
It's nice to know your being an ambassador to the area like a neighborhood watch.

Signs are like a restraining order for a stalker.......not much good. If there is evidence of shooting, people will stop and use the area too so keeping it clean will help. About all you can do though. Maby a little story in the newspaper? On the other hand, your old road grader is more powerful than anything at the gate!!!

Hey haven't you heard - they have the Right to Drive in America!!! The States don't care if anybody "Can" Drive, All they care about is getting the dollars from the License Fees and Vehicle Tabs. A few years back the State actually published - only to Law Enforcement - that over 40% of the drivers in WA don't have a valid. And that figure has gone up, I'm sure. Of course, that report was only about the ones who had been caught!

You can get the signs in Spanish too.

If they start arguing with you in English and then say they don't speak english, then that kind of makes them a liar right?

The sign will hopefully inform the ignorant - the willfully unethical nothing helps them - but it does protect the landowner as the landowner can then argue in court that the signs were posted. In some locales, you have to post property to protect or the trespasser will argue in court that it wasn't posted.

Exactly. We have multiple signs up to our acreage. It hasn't stopped the occasional jackass from trespassing anyway, but they can't claim we didn't warn them several times. One neerdowell even blasted one of the signs with birdshot. Cute.

Many thanks for the thoughts but this one is already Way beyond any speedy recovery. The Original break was 18 May 2016(yes, 17 months ago) but because of a Bad diagnosis by the what was supposed to be a "Specialist" I was back on my feet Way too soon. I'm scheduled to go back on 10 November for the 3rd Surgery. The original break was diagnosed as a "no surgery required" which I thought was great. I fell because of Low Blood Pressure and they still haven't come up with a reason and I've fallen Twice more. Each time doing another bit of damage but their still 'practicing' and unfortunately I'm the one they're practicing on so the reason is still hiding.

Since last November the activity at the gate has been:

Offensive graffiti on the gate directed at Hancock Forest Management, the lead landowner there.

12 bullet strikes on the gate and posts, plus four bullet holes in the sign mounted to the gate post that outlined the restrictions on access and the legal ordinance supporting it.

The sign mounted on the gate post was torn off and not replaced.

Several instances of finding brass/hulls near the gate with landowners cleaning them up. Targets fastened to trees on the closed part of the road twice.

Numerous instances of trash cleaned up by landowners.
