A SHTF scenario for one family could be a TEOTWAWKI for another.
What one could possibly walk away from another may have their life changed forever
Could be inches or seconds that make the difference
Okay, but where do you draw the line? If you could recover from whatever it is in a timely manner that would be SHTF, but if not it would be TEOTWAWKI? And if that's so what is timely?

So SHTF would be you get your car drug down the tracks and poop yourself, walk away with some scratches
TEOTWAWKI would be you were 2 seconds faster and you lost a leg or a loved one.
Many times while working in the streets in construction I could have had a driver look away and run over me.Could have been SHTF and broke my leg or crushed me and TEOTWAWKI
Never can tell

To me SHTF is something like the flooding post-Katrina where there's no infrastructure or support services for a week or so.

TEOTWAWKI (Tee-Ot-Walk-ee) 1.) sounds like a town in Minnesota, for one thing, and 2.) would be somewhere between the dinosaur-killing comet and a multinational nuclear exchange like we practiced for in the '60's.

Duck and cover! Quack!

I see a bad moon rising.
I see trouble on the way.
I see earthquakes and lightnin'.
I see bad times today.

Don't go around tonight,
Well it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

I hear hurricanes a blowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

Well don't go around tonight,
Well it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like we're in for nasty weather.
One eye is taken for an eye.

Well don't go around tonight,
Well it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

Don't come around tonight,
Well it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

This is the closest to SHTF that I can think of. Lots of candidates for TEOTWAWKI, e.g. "The End" by the Doors, "When the man comes around" Johnny Cash

I do like protest songs. But I have always been of two minds about that song , Sgt.Nambu.
For a lot of men who served in VietNam it was the end of their world.
Feel like I'm fixing' to die rag can come across as a little too light hearted or callous with some of the lines.
Not throwing you grief , 'cause I do like that song , but then I wonder if I should like it , as strongly as I feel about VietNam and the men who died or never came back , if that makes sense.
Or maybe I just need to remember it don't mean nothing , its just a song. LOL

Bad Moon Risin' is a great choice.
In the movie The Stand Don't fear the Reaper was used , that could work depending ...
For all you metal heads out there I Rule The Ruins by Warlock might be one.
Creeping Death and Call of Cthulhu by Metallica come to mind as well
Going back to classic rock / protest songs , Eve of Destruction by Barry Mcgurie also works.

No grief here Andy! I never thought of "Fixin" as light hearted. I see it as the very blackest humor.
Your Creedence song reminds me of the line that I use on another site.

"........200 million guns guns were loaded! The Devil cried,"take aim!"
Run Through The Jungle

Only thing I'd add is to echo the idea that the divide between the two categories might not be all that clear. I mean that in the sense that the frog in the pot of water might not realize exactly when the water got too hot.

As an example: I believe in climate change (I know a lot of y'all don't). I believe the effects of climate change will create "climate refugees," moving generally south to north, in search of arable land and potable water. Initially, as we're chasing veggie poachers out of our truck gardens, it'll seem like an SHTF kind of event. As the numbers increase, and strain and overwhelm local services, we'll start to move on over to TEOTWAWKI.

I would say Blue Oyster Cult's lyrics "Joan Crawford" has risen from the grave, etc. fits for the TEOTWAWKI sound track!

"Joan Crawford"

Junkies down in Brooklyn are going crazy
They're laughing just like hungry dogs in the street
Policemen are hiding behind the skirts of little girls
Their eyes have turned the color of frozen meat

No, no no no, no no no no no no no no,
Joan Crawford has risen from the grave
Joan Crawford has risen from the grave

Catholic schoolgirls have thrown away their mascara
They chain themselves to the axles of big Mack trucks
The sky is filled with hurt and shivering angels
The fat lady lives! Children, start your trucks!

No, no no no, no no no no no no no no,
Joan Crawford has risen from the grave
Joan Crawford has risen from the grave

(Christina... Mother's home!
No, no...
Christina...
No, no - no, no...
Come to Mother...
No, no - no, no, no no no no no no
Christina...)

Joan Crawford has risen from the grave
Joan Crawford has risen from the grave
Joan Crawford has risen from the grave
Joan Crawford has risen from the grave
Joan Crawford has risen from the grave
Joan Crawford has risen from the grave
Joan Crawford has risen from the grave
Joan Crawford has risen:eek::eek::eek:

Brutus Out

Oh, a storm is threat'ning
My very life today
If I don't get some shelter
Oh yeah, I'm gonna fade away

War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Ooh, see the fire is sweepin'
Our very street today
Burns like a red coal carpet
Mad bull lost it's way

War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

The floods is threat'ning
My very life today
Gimme, gimme shelter
Or I'm gonna fade away

War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
I tell you love, sister, it's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
Kiss away, kiss away

We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgement of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again

The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fold, that's all
And the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
No, no!

I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
Though I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?

There's nothing in the streets
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Are now parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

This is a song about this election year you know. " We don't get fooled again".

As a side line the picture on this album cover, these guys had pulled over on the side of the road to take a piss, and the photographer was with them taking pictures and they were just all zipping up as this picture was taken. Read that in a Rolling Stone magazine interview with Pete Townsend, on my plane ride back from Phoenix last month. Reading about The Who with Creams Royal Albert Hall concert playing on my mp3 player. Best way to pass boring flight time.

I woke up thinking about this thread, and this song:

"Native Son" John Hiatt

You finally found the mainstream
In the middle of your life
You tapped into a vein
Of endless gold chains
Now you're locked up tight
Tearing down the middle of it
Splitting it right in half
Bobbing up and down the waves
Like a runaway slave
On a Huck Finn raft

Take your wife
Take your family
Take your gun
Running through the woods
And the burned out neighborhoods
Looking for someone
A member of your tribe
A Place you can hide
'Til the war has begun
'Cause in the fields before the flood
You'll be spilling blood
Like a native son

Where you gonna run to
There ain't no underground
If only you could fly
You'd cut across the sky
Like a rifle round
Oh, who are your people
And where is your homeland
'Cause they're dying side by side
At the river of pride
Where we tried to take a stand

Take your wife
Take your family
Take your gun
Running through the woods
And the burned out neighborhoods
Looking for someone
A member of your tribe
A Place you can hide
'Til the war has begun
'Cause in the fields before the flood
You'll be spilling blood
Like a native son

In the fields before the flood
You'll be spilling blood
Like a native son

SHTF is when you have a negligent discharge that shoots you wife in the foot.
TEOTWAWKI Is when you have a negligent discharge while carrying in an appendix holster.
