No better time than now; to practice Intelligence Gathering, Recording, Reporting, and forming Mosaics or Templates.

Building Blocks of Intelligence: SALUTE and SALT Reporting

Freedom of maneuver to "Prepare the Battlefield" is much easier while the rule of law is in place; once the axe falls, the security situation will definitely hinder training & movement.

Gathering, Reporting, Recording, and Creating Templates is much more difficult than some might think because the information usually passes from one person to a number of other people; it's an exercise of comprehension.

There are a number of memorization exercises that are used and mastered by the pros.

No law against practicing while respecting private property; but there are exceptions @ some Federal & State properties.

In parallel with this; one could look at the Army's Long Range surviellance training documents/field manuals, and also look at the Reconnassaince, Surviellance, Target Acquisition team training materials/doctrines, and quite possibly the older declassified LRRP training/after action reports if available...

Instead of thinking one would/should be equipped to treat every encounter as "enemy contact/ambush to beat back/engage", perhaps adjust to "contact with possible hostiles and break contact if needed", depending on the situations of course.
Basically.. instead of thinking one must be prepared to engage in a running gunfight as a first resort, make that the very last resort, as you may very well need to work around or with the possible hostile contacts.

Using such training and tactics may indeed help identify possible problem areas, new routes, areas of vulnerability, areas of protection, possible sites for listening/observation, and countersurviellance. (That last part clearly means watching the watchers and reporting on possible activities)

In this, it helps to maintain and discover networks of possible allies and informants who may be interested in supporting the cause, depending on whats in it for them. (May be useful to make contacts with the criminal underground if absolutely necessary, such as information on police movement and the likes, not necessarily friends but...)

Mutual Assistance Group (MAG) C3.
C3 = Command, Control, & Intelligence.

Somebody in the MAG sets aside some space in a garage, an RV, a shop, or a spare room that can accommodate the exchange of Essential Elements of Friendly Information (EEFI) & Essential Elements of Enemy Information can (EEEI).

MAG members need to be carefully selected; 2-10 personnel for the inner circle. Outer circle will not know they are being employed...an example would be a retail associate who rings up a large order, but has no earthly idea what the MAG is doing...

MAGs are key to the best chance of surviving a calamity...a group of self-sufficient individuals who can provide the MAG with 2-3 valuable skills; (there are many) medical, signal, leadership, humint, tactical training, weapons training, fire fighting, logistical, security, transpo, and perhaps public affairs....the list may be long or short depending on the situation and the size n scope of the MAG.

MAGs are not a militia, but can transition to a militia if the shtf.

MAGs can utilize BREVMATS (above) via text messaging VOIP, FM, or phone on a daily basis.

Specific types of MAG activities is best described F2F...:D

MAG recruiting tools:

Comprehensive Preparedness Guide (CPG) 101 has a great MAG formation tool in ch4.

https://www.fema.gov/pdf/about/divisions/npd/CPG_101_V2.pdf

Another recruitment tool is "MICE to RASCLS"; its real but it reads like a Tom Clancy novel....

Old tool is M.I.C.E.
Money
Ideology
Coercion/Compromise
Excitement

Modern tool is R.A.S.C.L.S.
Reciprocation
Authority
Scarcity
Committment and Consistency
Liking
Social Proof

A good read on MICE to RASCLS; goes a long way in forming a MAG.

Six Principles of Agent Recruitment - GeoPol Intelligence

Pick your MAG carefully!

Good topo maps; good optics (spotters scope, binocs, etc), good compass, maybe GPS, comm gear for your small unit, enough gear and depending on setups; minimal fighting load, with caches/OP/base camps; maintain OPSEC, PERSEC, concealment/camouflage/cover techniques and that sort of thing.. does that sound about right, equipment-wise?

Sure, and think outside the box on base camps and PBs; they can be anywhere (pre-shtf), but away from the OBJ areas, defendable, recognizeable, off natural lines of drift etc.

On maps; there are schematics, pamphlets, surveys, brochures, architectual plans, and drawings.

On camouflage; some environments may require the oddest of odd garments....might even be a suit and tie...barf

Pre-shtf; try to think more towards a legal and low-key stategic operation, than a full-on tactical operation.

2x CMVS medic pockets
1x MOLLE Waistpack for snivel gear, could sub other gear
3x USGI pistol mag pouches
USGI MOLLE leg/drop holster platform (has both MOLLE and ALICE webbing for the Bianchi holster)
Bianchi UM84/M12 holster

Main first aid kit in hydration pack, essentials in one grenade pocket on ammo pouch
Maps in the FLC mesh pockets
Compass and headlamp with filters in other grenade pocket
Dry snack foods in one medic pocket

Hypothetical of course. Something to consider would be that while the above works fine in a woodland environment, it might not work as well in a mostly suburban/urban area... for that, I am designing a setup thats mostly concealable, but one wonders whats available out there that doesn't look like "tactical operator"... however.. black belt kit and hi vis safety vest with hard hat and surveyors style tools might be more useful, especially using say a surplus 90s utility bodied truck... most people would assume that you're just a city worker or contractor

Edit; theres nothing illegal about having PSE/ hi vis vest on even if not actually working for city/county. Could always say youre being safety minded and want to confirm maps to actual real world readings

Another thing to consoder, especially given the large number of homeless people in certain areas... develop contacts/informant network with some of them, as assets in counterintelligence work (tracking/watching police movement, unfriendly/hostile politicians(aint that most of them...) certain peoples, that sort of thing...cultivate and develop a sort of casual/informal relationship with a few of them, maybe focus on those who are former vets/PMCs, as they would be able to understand some of the information needed.. I know some on here have had training in utilizing counter intelligence overseas, perhaps apply that in areas such as Portland Metro? They probably would know good routes to take that avoids police/mil choke points, as well as areas to avoid

Ever wonder what some of the pan handlers and "homeless" people are really doing...?

:s0140:

Ever glance at the license plate numbers on the back of their cardboard signs...
