Much like burning the flag as a protest , refusing to stand during the anthem can cause you to lose support.
Or get your message lost in your action.
Some folks have the idea that the anthem and flag represent the idea that you have the right to protest.
By not standing during the anthem or burning the flag you are disrespecting or destroying the very symbols of what allows you to protest.
