We always should be self reliant........it is the primary trait of a westerner. My USCG son and daughter in law are headed to 3 years in Puerto Rico very soon. His station is an old USAF base on the northwest coast, it was well built and has been fully functioning since the wind stopped. Small damages that were immediately repaired. Do you remember the parable about the 3 little pigs......the one that took the time and energy to build with bricks did fine. It is still (?) taught to school children. We learn most of what we need in kindergarten. If you live in little more than a cardboard box you are destine to get blown away.@CountryGent thx for posting. For me it is reminder that I need to assume my family and I must be self-reliant after a major disaster.
