So Giffords got to speak for TEN MINUTES ahead of WA state residents, who were limited to 90 seconds each.

Over on WAguns, people are saying that this violates state law - non-residents are supposedly restricted to speak only after all state residents provide input. But, nobody can cite this law?

Rumor has it that Gabby showed up on such short notice because Bloomberg forked out 60k in haste to get her up here. I mean seriously, there was almost no warning that she was coming, but once she was here the state pulled out all stops to accomodate her above all else.

Who do we complain to about this obvious bias by the committee in allowing Giffords to come out of nowhere and browbeat WA citizens?

I think this absolutely needs to be followed up on. It's bad enough we have a New York billionaire trying to shape the way Washingtonians live, but our own state government is giving these idiots preferential treatment ?

#1: Giffords spoke for less than 1 minute. Mark Kelly did most of the talking, for about 6 minutes.

#2: WHERE did you hear this "rumor?" I also heard yesterday that WSP troopers escorted the anti-gunners into the hearing room ahead of everyone else Tuesday and called B.S. on it. I was there, and the press were the first ones in the room, to set up. I was with that contingent. Nobody got in ahead of that and witnesses and the press got the forward row seats.

#3 Don't complain. Just vote.

‘It's just a start' – More today on gun control in Washington Senate

Today's dual hearing on Initiatives 591 and 594 before the Senate Law and Justice Committee in Olympia will likely have a lower profile than yesterday's House event featuring former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, but it might have more red meat.

Dave, I wasn't there so I'm only working on what I've read on both Waguns and Defensive Carry, which is that Giffords spoke for a minute and Kelly for 9. I consider them to be for all intents the same person.

Do you have any insight into non-resident comment rules? I cannot do a bunch of reaearch on this now, as I'm already sneaking in forum time while on a business trip :)

The Bloomberg rumor is pure speculation on the part of others. I'm skeptical but it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Rumor, speculation....the stuff that makes our side look rather foolish at times if there's no fact to back it up.

Just be careful with that one, pls. ;)

I think you can watch the video (use the link in my column) and time Mr. Kelly's remarks.

As for allowing special witnesses to testify ahead of the pack, that's not unusual for this kind of showcase event. I read nothing into it other than what it was, a celebrity appearance on behalf of an issue that really provides no solution or prevention to the kind of thing that impaired Ms. Giffords.

I seriously doubt it will sway anyone one way or the other in the final analysis. Good political theater.

Now the real fun begins. Get your facts together, get them straight, go forth and convince your pals and anyone else why you think they should vote against I-594.

I wrote my reps and told them how i was offended by a non resident being allowed to speak. BTW Jab Angel opposes it also. I have not heard back from Jesse Young or Seaquist yet.
I also went to thee meeting but left when I found I could not get into the hearing and would be stuck in overflow.People in overflow were totally ignored.

ST article:

"Kelly, who had previously testified in support of similar laws in Colorado, Nevada and Delaware, played up his Washington state connections: He noted he used to live on Whidbey Island and mentioned Seattle’s May 2012 Café Racer shootings before discussing several more recent tragedies."

Hilarious. Funny how he brings up he used to live on Whidbey Island... so that actually makes his opinion valid? My family used to live in Oakland and SF... fly me back to CA so I can testify about all your stupid laws, including, but not limited to, guns and restaurant regs that require even skilled sushi chefs to wear GLOVES!

Not to mention 594 would have done NOTHING to stop the Cafe Racer tragedy when the shooter's family clearly failed to get him the help he needed.

Gah.

Ah, but the Times didn't cover the real "meat" session before the Senate...when the Q&A for I-594 proponents got emotional flash but no substance...

In Senate, less circus, more circumspection, no media, one ‘shock'

Yesterday's dual Senate hearings on Initiatives 591 and 594 saw supporters of expanded background checks repeatedly insist that their measure would help prevent "gun violence...

Dave, if you were in with the press, then you probably weren't in line to see this. Take it at face value, but here is supposed video of WSP escorting in anti-gun protestors right past the queue of pro-gun protestors:
