High intensity military warfare will flatten virtually all buildings, even 8" concrete walls will not protect you from a 60mm mortar round coming through the roof. No need to point out the obvious lethality of military hardware.
Once a family or group starts running they are easy prey, this has been the basic component of all types of warfare for 1000's of years. If you run you die tired, exhausted, hungry and weak.
My efforts are aimed at defeating the semi-organized or lightly armed organized gang/"militia" hoping that fuel becomes scarce and isolation and several river crossings becomes the best passive defense.
Most of mankind's wars are fought for control of resources, population centers arise around the best farm land, the best transport routes, energy and raw materials needed to build a society, those are vital objectives for military conquest. Strip malls, suburbs and marginal farm lands are on the bottom of the list, I figure those areas will be turned over to the Zombie Hordes or an equivalent.
Nobody lives forever, we cannot chose how or why we came to be born but choosing how we go out may be the only choice we are left with.

One other tip to in place defenders....if you choose that risky tactic. RANGE every approach. KNOW exactly how far Mr. Jonhson's orchard is and how far it is to his well where Lassie saved your life as a kid when you fell in.... Knowledge is power! Learn, Train,Fight, Survive!

If your house can defend you from the mini-gun and rockets/missiles on any military helicopter, you have done well. Of course, after the helicopters come the tanks, jets and bunker busting missiles.

Our personal defenses are to defend us from each other. The wrath of the US military coming after YOU as a target will not end in your favor. You can look at all the innocent people(I said it and I believe it) in Waco and Ruby Ridge as just two examples. Imagine if they had brought just one attack helicopter?

Nearly every military in the world fields some variety of the 60mm mortar, and nearly all of them are cross compatible from WW1 french mortars up through todays M224, you just can't use the increment charges from a modern mortar round with the earlier mortars, but you can still drop the round down the muzzle and expect it to go "POOF".

Realistically, the "modern" incarnation of the mortar is possibly one of the best light support weapons out there, it hits farther, harder, than anything short of cannon artillery, yet a complete M224 is ~50lbs, the M119A1 (105mm howitzer system) comes in at a svelt 5000lbs by comparison. Not to mention size and support of the ammunition, the weapon, and the crew that's needed to fire it. Mortars can be used by total idiots with two hands, the rounds for the 60mm system weigh in at under 10lbs, which means a lot more ammo can be carried.

When I was a E4 a few senior NCO told me that they would use a steel helmet as a replacement for the base plate and dump the T&E mech with the H&H unit!

2) If things truly goes shtf direction, gangs of civilians are not going to be as big of a problem as some of these post apocalyptic movies represent. If you shoot few of these individuals dead, the others will have a lot desire to try to penetrate you defenses. Don't get me wrong, they will still want to kill you but the chances of them of them laying a siege and applying advanced attack strategies in order to kill you are somewhere near zero.

Agreed! Criminals, starving hordes, just the liberals down the block, don't have the hardy hood to watch a couple of their friends blown apart by 7.62N and then advance into the fire. I know I wouldn't! Not in the infantry anymore! Being sniped, or fire bombed, greater probability!

I foresee and prep for a variety of threats ranging from petty theft to Bosnian level threats or any increment between the two. In the current political climate anything is possible. We are looking at the deployment of survailance drones against the American public in the next few years (now), in a decade it will be armed drones. All made possible by 9-11 and the Pretender in Power.
There is a host of oppressions POTUS might launch against America, we are suffering from economic warfare now and that is #1 in the Commie/socialistic playbook but it gets worse;
Poverty, disarmament, starvation, enslavement, genocide. In the Spanish "Civil War" the communists started by taking the guns, then money, food, clothes, shoes and then mass murder. The N. Koreans skipped all of the above and went straight to Torture/Mass Murder.
Stalin and Mao made Hitler look like a piker. The current regime Loves Mao and has said so.
Mao murdered 30 million because 'they', the Chinese peasants, could not produce as much iron ore as the UK, during a Soviet directed coal miner strike!
