Blitzkrieg, those rail base plates are about 10"x12" with several square holes for spikes on either side. The rail sits on the base plate or shoe, which aligns and angles the rail. It's attached to the tie or sleeper with 4 spikes and sometimes a large spring clip. When they change out ties they leave the plates and old rusted spikes laying there on the gravel bed.

Oooh, will have to go scouting ASAP.. the end of the bike trail and the now trackless old track area is about 1 mile away..
