Check with the airline to be sure.
Typically you need a hard case for the handgun that will lock. This can be the one it came in from the factory if it has the hole to accept a padlock. You can also use a Pelican or Storm case with a lock. The gun will have to be unloaded with no magazine in it. Magazines need to be unloaded too. All can be stored in this case. You will be asked if the gun is unloaded and you may have to show this to be true. If you have the storm/pelican style case you can ship it on it's own or inside checked luggage. If you are transporting ammo along with then it will have to be separate from the locked container. It can still be in the same checked luggage. Ammo needs to be in factory packaging or in containers. There are regulations on how much ammo you can carry. Check with the airline ahead of time. The usual is 11 lbs of ammo which equals about 400 rounds of 9mm.
