I'm no doubt showing my age, what with the kids these days and their fancy assisted opening, clip-on knives. I carry this every day. 81O5IdJU8OL._SX425_.jpg
Mine is about 40 years old.

4 requirements for any knife I carry in my pocket:

1. It has to fold- No fixed blades near important anatomical monuments.

2. It has to lock open- I have a 50-year old scar on my little finger from my non-locking Boy Scout Knife.

3. It has to be legal to carry- I'm not going to jail for some stupid pocket knife.

4. It has to stay closed until I open it- I don't want some spring assisted flipper thingy popping it open in my pocket, especially near important anatomical monuments.

Those are fine old knives! My problem is that they are down in the pocket instead of hanging down the side of the pocket on the clip. I have one of the curses of modern man, a wad of keys the size of my fist! I've found one handed opening is real handy too!

Love my Kershaw Blur as well.
The ESEE 3 is a great knife if you can do without a folder.

On a side note, stay away from the "Made in China" Kershaws.

I own three of the cheap Chinese Kershaws, because I really, really like the shape of the blade and cheap but light scales. The steel is really pretty good, they hold a decent edge and are easy to sharpen. Where they come up short is lightly constructed, but I'd cut my toe off before using a knife as a pry bar!

My EDC knife/box opener/crap scraper and sometimes screwdriver and prybar for the past
few years has been a SOG Trident. Assisted open, axis lock. Clip is on the tail
end and reversible. I carry it left pocket---just hook the clip with my middle finger, draw and hit the
opening stud as it comes into my hand. I abuse it daily at work-----stuff I would never do to my
Benchmades or Spydercos.

Kershaw Cryo is my every day working pocket knife now. I'm also a huge fan of the CRKT M16 series - and the Gerber knockoff of same. The CRKT has a stronger locking system.

Must say that with the spring assist of the Cryo, I don't see myself going back to a standard flipper or thumb stud activated folder. Most of the time I"m opening a knife, I'm holding or doing something with my other hand, the spring assist makes it easy and fast to open and it locks up nice and solid. Almost no side to side blade wiggle - which is nice for theCHinese made knives.

The Cryo is a Hinderer design - it's essentially a stripped down version of his $200-400 knives.

Like ZA - I loose and abuse my equipment - so $50 or so is the most I like spending on any piece of gear I"m likely to loose. I've literally lost over a dozen knives and multi-tools - maybe two dozen - in the 10+ years I've been towing. Some mechanics or customers must've had happy surprises to find leathermen, gerber, or victorinox multitools in the driveways or engine compartments. I've lost Sure Fire flash lights, Mag Lites, etc. Lots of Gerber, CRKT, and Kershaw folding knives, a handful of fixed blades too. It hurts loosing a $100 tool too much to keep repeating that mistake. I figure a $50 tool will have me crying half as much to loose or break it.

Half the time I buy another knife to take care of my fix and don't sharpen them anyway.
Plus there is the loss factor. Sometimes my knives don't make it home with me. My Benchmade I carry now, griptilian, has lasted 2-3 years now.
Last is the 'give away' factor.I tend to hand knives over to friends once in a while. Just a few good friends as I don't have money to give acquaintances knives.
So the moral of the story is,even the china knives have a place with me

Wife and I each carry this one,

http://www.sogknives.com/everyday-carry/knives/flash-i-partially-serrated-black-tini.html

or this one, depending on what we are doing.

http://www.benchmade.com/products/14700

We each have a 14750 that were lanyarded and used for emergency climbing/Crevasse rescue, but they are very high quality blades for other things also. :)

Both the above are "working knives" Quick and useful.
We have many many folders and fixed blades, all have their purpose.
The old camilus/boy-scout or swiss army types are great camping knives for opening cans and etc. The catlemans knife, which anyone growing up on a farm knew how to use....
The knife is the handiest tool anyone can have and now days the freaks at the the schools won't even let a kid grow up and learn to use the old basic pocket knife. Yes they are the freaks that control our country and brainwash the kids. They now teach the kids that even a basic knife is evil right down to the plastic picnic throwaways. What a screwed up world we have let it become.

I bought two years ago. They are still available on the net at places like Ebay.
Where I paid over 200 they are now for sale for around 99

I did a number of searches on EBay, and nothing shows up. I think that inventory for it has dried up.

... and 9mm has just as good stopping power ....

Just looking for a good every day pocket knife (folder). Budget would be under $100.

I'm a casual user and I don' necessarily take all that good care of them. Have had a few cheap ones that I abuse till no longer useful. I use them to cut anything I think needs cut, pry something that I can't get a finger under, pound something that needs a good pounding, etc. etc.

I have decided I should take better care of these things and plan on buying a sharpening tool (still researching this issue) and learning what I can.

Anyway, any suggestions for a good all around pocket knife??

Thoughts
1. Drop below to the knives for sale and buy from someone on NWFA
https://www.northwestfirearms.com/forums/edged-weapon-classifieds.103/
2. There are hundreds of good choices

What are you going to do with it?
- Occasional package opening,
- Orange peeling?
Those are the top 2 uses for EDC knives and pretty much all of them will do that.

Got a few hours (days) U-Tuby on to NutNFancy's Channel and watch his "hall of fame" videos (if I add quickly this is just under 300 videos)

What is Sharp -

I use a Lansky and like it (I found this Lansky video at random as an example)
And finish with a strope

Look thru EDC threads ( we need on on NWFA IMO ) and see what is commonly carried
http://everydaycarry.com/
- lots of Swiss Army Knives (I have one in my man purse)
- lots of Leatherman ( I have one in my right rear pocket)
- many KAI ( ZT & Kershaw ) knives I rotate thru a dozen knives, like fashion accessories, today I have a CRKT Drifter, light and short enough for the office.

I found a good selection at competitive prices at Sportsman's

and of course, Amazon.

And, since you are in Portland, several vendors have manufacturers stores in the area.

Try as I might, I always lose folding knives.
Mostly due to work, they either get covered in resin, left in a crawlspace or attic or atop my truck as I drive off from a job.
..Even the decent quality expensive ones.
So, I just pick up "Coast" knives.

While they arent expensive, they hold up pretty well to my abuse I dish out.

Unless its a fixed blade, I dont spend good money on folding knives anymore.

One more option for inexpensive, but decent quality knives - this 2 pack on Amazon. Bought some recently for a trip, had them shipped ahead to avoid the airline, and expected to toss them in the trash after I was done. Quality was better than I thought. Great knife if you expect you'll lose it. They'll hold an edge for a while and they look and feel good. I decided to keep them and ship them back home with a few other items I had to ship. Great deal for $6 total shipped (if you have Prime):

I stock up on those in January at Walmart - they clear that stuff out for $1.50 sometimes. Always keep them as backups and gifts.

Well if nuthead thinks it's good,I'll never know if it is or not. I avoid him and any product he endorses.
