Are you saying this is not a new strategy? I know they wanted to take guns from vets, but using vets to legitimize their fight against guns... that's low.
I also know a number of vets that don't think anybody should have guns... WTF?

Just because someone is a veteran doesn't give them any more "moral authority" or the last word on the 2A than say... a meter reader.

I don't know that I would describe them as 'turncoat'.
I have not read the article so I don't know how the vets felt about private gun ownership, but a lot of the people I served with, especially the young bucks in boot, were very uninformed/misinformed about guns in general, self-defense and private gun ownership. Even back in the 70s (when I went thru boot) there were a significant number of them.

Naturally.
Or rather - human nature.
Humans generally are emotional, irrational and lazy. They would rather be told how to feel about an issue/topic than have to do the work to inform themselves and think objectively/rationally/logically about anything.
That doesn't necessarily make most pro-gun people more logical or rational.
I would bet most of the pro-gun people are not really any different in that sense from anti-gun people; most of us probably grew up in a pro-gun atmosphere to one degree or another, so we haven't had to do much thinking/work if any because we were taught from the outset to be pro-gun. So most of us didn't have to swim against the tide so to speak.
Sure, there are 'converts' in the pro-gun camp, but most of us grew up being pro-gun, so it wasn't hard staying that way. And here on these forums are people who mostly have more than a passing interest in guns - we are "gun nuts".
What is working against us is the fact that as a percentage of the population, we are increasingly a minority. The percentage of gun owners is getting smaller (while the absolute number increases slightly) and the percentage of pro gun rights people is getting smaller too. Eventually the majority will vote to remove our rights, even though they are theoretically protected by the Constitution.
There is a quote by Justice Brennan that I can't find right now, but he basically asserted (in a court opinion I think) that the majority cannot vote away a right by the minority. I agree with that assertion, I just wish more in the judicial branch understood that principle.
