Is the only reason this isn't already an active solution, because people expect that things eventually will get fixed when there's an outage? Or is it because they don't have a way to charge/tax people, or something stupid like that?

A small generator like the ones used in a small RV can easily power a fuel pump.
As a retired electrician hooking up a generator to a fuel pump no problem. I have
worked with electricians that are "on call" for emergency services just for the
purpose of connecting temp power.

He said no generators either.....no electricity.
So all this gas will run out also. If the grid stays down for a month all stations will have been 'liberated' ? of their fuel

The thing to do then is have your own fuel supply. Every farmer out here has a few fuel tanks around. Can't just stop cuttin hay to go to town for fuel. This would be hard to pull off in town maybe. Unless it looked like a furnace oil tank and someone would fill it for you. Or you haul 5 gallon cans to keep it topped off.
All your food stores,water stores and ammo stores will run out at some time. All you can hope for is it's right about when you die.

Well in that town since there are only two gas stations for 20,000 population they will be out in about 6 hours. No matter what the price, I do not see any of the local stations having any kind of capability of desire to provide fuel under those conditions.

Emergency vehicles are fueled at their own locations or some are filled at local card locks. I know the WCSO has a plan for electrical failure to get fuel from the card lock tanks.

Don't forget the fuel tank farms in NW Portland. Lot's of fuel sitting there just waiting for you to open a valve.

Why not get your vehicle modified to run on propane, you can rob those tanks they leave outside pharmacies, feed shops & hardware stores?

In SHTF, those will be the first areas to be controlled by whoever wants to control the fuel. North south road access only, river on one side and hills on the other. Fuel would have to have armed escorts I would think. Depending on the earthquake size, the hills may slide down there or the whole area may just liqufiy and be gone.

Why can't you just cut the padlock off the filler tube and siphon gas right out of the big tank?

well for one how are you going to get lower then the under ground tank? you can only siphon if the exit is lower then the intake.

A really good electric fuel pump like a Mallory 140 GPH might be able to pull fuel up a few feet but thats iffy.

A simple barrel hand pump could be the ticket. Not that they are recomended for gasoline but I know people who use them.

Can't siphon fuel from a tank below ground to a tank above ground. Just saying.

Bolt cutters, a manual pump or 12v pump sounds perfect.

I guess if the electricity is out then they will not be playing video poker. My bad. They will still not be at the gas station. The attendants at the local stations for the most part have one decent one. Being at work is a pain for most of them. This haji spilled diesel down the side of my can last week. He jabbered something in haji and said oh my bad. Then he took the windshield cleaning squegee and wiped if off, stuck in right back in the water then washed the next guys window and smeared diesel slime all over it. Muttered something in haji and said my bad. I am sure this went on for a bit.

The gas "shortages" of the late 70's made everybody a thief at one point or another. An 8 foot section of 1/2 inch garden hose was pretty much standard trunk or pickup bed equipment in those days.

If you don't have your own stores of fuel and we loose power for long periods of time you are basically hosed unless you have an army of your own. Things will get hostile quick and I have no intentions of being anywhere near any of that.

Keep your car or truck above 1/2 tank at all times and keep some reserve fuel at home.

As a teenager in the 70's I once tried stealing some gas from a construction site. I didn't notice the warning sign about guard dog on duty, being pitch black and all.
I never heard that German Sheppard until he took a chunk out of my a**.
I've never run so hard in my life.
