I'm not attempting to be vengeful. When the UK employed hanging, a loop with a leather sleeve sewn upon it permitted the rope to be reused. (Remember, this was during WW2 when hangings were a routine occurrence). When properly implemented, the rope is quite humane. England's longest serving hangman, Albert Peirrepoint, calculated the precise weight-to-drop ration to ensure that the neck of the ISDP snaps cleanly without decapitation. A quick, clean death is the objective, isn't it?
Technically, you can still be hung in the Navy & Marine Corps.
