Everyone has their favorite caliber and no matter whether you ask or not, people feel the need to give you their opinion...so, here's mine... :s0140: I have an old Remington 30-06 that I've used on Kodiak Island with light loads to shoot the dog sized little Sitka Blacktail deer effectively with little waste. I've also used it with heavy loads to effectively take down a couple Yakutat Moose. My father in law (who bought the gun new in the 60's) shot countless elk with it in Oregon. The 30-06 is a very versatile caliber.

I think if this is a new thing for your friend, I'd hunt (see what I did there) around for a used rifle, then if he ends up liking it, spend money on something good.
