Odd choice on not using metal brushes, c'est la vie.

I believe you're thinking of the coated rods, not the carbon rods, these do not break down.
 
I always use a bore snake on .22 caliber. The wire is a good idea though you could probably use 1/8 aluminum or brass round stock from a hardware store and just push patches through.
 
I'm going to stick my neck out and say you've not tried Tipton or Gunslick one piece carbon rods, i hated rods until i bought these, and i was trying to use the Otis system amongst others - good for a compromise, scaled down cleaning, but if i'm at my gun bench, i want the full sized carbon rods.
I will look at those when I see them in the store. Where did you get yours? Thanks.
