I believe you're thinking of the coated rods, not the carbon rods, these do not break down.

I always use a bore snake on .22 caliber. The wire is a good idea though you could probably use 1/8 aluminum or brass round stock from a hardware store and just push patches through.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say you've not tried Tipton or Gunslick one piece carbon rods, i hated rods until i bought these, and i was trying to use the Otis system amongst others - good for a compromise, scaled down cleaning, but if i'm at my gun bench, i want the full sized carbon rods.

I think i got one from Amazon and the other from Sportsmans.

I got the Otis kit at fisherman's, I'd check them out. Delta park has a nice fisherman's there.
