Ya. Surgery sucks.

But I'm grateful for it. If I was born in some turd world country. Or 100 years ago.
I would have just been another spent 50 year old man. ;)

By shaving down 30 years of bone growth to my shoulder. And sewing up the damage caused by the spurs. I was basically allowed to reset my shoulder odometer from 275,000 miles to 60,000.

I just need to do my part and eat right, drink right, and keep walking to promote healing.
Along with the PT exercises and stretching I'm responsible for at home.
I don't take this gift for granted. And much of the outcome is in my hands. :s0092:

Your an inspiration as always sir;).

Over the last 2 years I've certainly had a goal in mind - and every set back just makes me more determined to change things for the better. I've had hit and miss results, mostly because of my stomach issues but I'm going in for yet another exploratory surgery at the end of the month. It's a hail marry 2% possibility but at this point they have ruled out dozens and dozens of other illnesses (and about run out - on my 4th 'best specialist in the area' and I like this guy because he remembers me after 6 months or a year and seems to always be researching anything that may help, like a dog with a bone so I'm sticking with this guy until my insurance changes or he leaves) so I figure even with some discomfort and a short recovery time it is worth the time.

This last week I've been on the couch just about 24/7 and have been keenly aware of my caloric intake. To the point I'm starting to get 'reminders' from the wife about how my guts go nuts when I just stop eating or close too it.

Now I'm paying for it with stomach cramps but I've endured and have been sweating like only a fat man can all morning lol. Making dog food is exhausting hopping around the kitchen.

I'm sure the fact that the dog has lunch but not dinner is a large motivator:D:confused:. (Not that I couldn't go buy the dry food he was on last, but that is a slippery slope for me)

I do much better with accountability and have been out walking the dog (pre this newest knee issue) while the ladies look for the infamous Pokémon around parks. I can't keep up when it's just the kid and I, but she spent 4 years in cross country, track, swimming and tennis. She has also continued to run but gets lazy about it and moody. That's when my wife says she has to run the next day or else - may have too much of her old mans genes lol.

I like small amounts of company but one of my best friends that just moved back to town and is close, is in peak condition and wakes up at 4am to go to some cross fit class and that ain't happening here:eek:. Hell he can't sit still for 30 min and will drop and do push-ups or whatever. So we are grossly unmatched - he would kill me trying to motivate me:oops:. (Once long ago we were almost perfectly matched in strength and stamina - those were the best workouts of my life)

Right now I'm happy just to be able to help a little around the house.

Oh, and 2 stores in one day alone was too much:(. I woke up on the couch at 3am feeling very close to how I felt after my motorcycle accident - just battered all over. Spent 2.5 hours trying not to give in to the desire for a pain killer before I fell asleep at 5:30.

Got to get a sharpie and write 'take it slow' on the back of my hands or something....

Mom is 91 this year.
Pretty spry for an oldie, though.
Still, she walks around like a toddler because she spends most of her day sitting around watching tv.
The weather's been pretty nice up here lately, so I've been taking her for walks around the yard (usually starts off with a hike to the mail box to check the mail) every day.
Right now she seems up for it, so its easy, but when the weather turns bad (i.e., overcast and 70's), she tends to want to hunker down inside the house.
Oh well, baby steps (literally!) and small victories. That's how we're living life these days.
It works.

4 days on the McKenzie River this week:
Monday - hiked some waterfalls.
Tuesday - mountain bikes on single track.
Wednesday - whitewater rafting and hiked more waterfalls.
Thursday - elevated blood pressure driving home. Constant parade of idiots on the road.
Friday - hoping to waterski this afternoon if all the same idiots aren't out on the ramp and the river.

Saw this and didn't realize what it was really about until part of the way in.

Dealing with a double tear in my knee, I've been pretty down about possible weight gain and the loss of the little stamina I had built up prior to my knee issues.

This video has given me quite a bit of inspiration and I hope it sticks around for awhile so I don't stay in a slump.

I've been in the training mode the last several months. Running at lunch 2-3 days a week and hiking with a 40 pound pack another 1-2. I'm a little slower than usual in the warmer weather but I'm a little older than usual too.

My objective is getting back to the point of combat ready. Not a very measurable goal, rather subjective really, but that's what I've got for now.

Get fit, get armed, get trained.

Oh man the heats brutal!

I had a 10:15am surgery consultation today and had no AC on the way there, which wasn't bad.

After getting into the waiting room 30 min early, they sent me into the back for a couple more X-rays.

Then sitting for 10 min and over to another room to wait for the doc.

Walking on a cane brought my pulse from an average 60bps to 112bps just in that short walk, so I expect I'll loose some pounds quickly over the next few months working on Phys Therapy and walking for stamina.

Down from 280 to 268 in not that long so far. I'd be real happy to be in the 220 range with stamina by the end of winter so I can work on packing on some muscle in the spring.

You might find a pool Joe. A nearby community college or the like?
You don't need legs to swim. And you can work the upper body and get some great cardio.
Maybe run it past your PT instructor?

Now I don't like pools myself. But if that's what it takes? I'm on it. ;)

I myself am doing well at PT. My shoulder surgery was two months ago. And I can now reach up and touch the back of my head. So I'm getting some range.
If my range is good enough I will be back at the gym at three months. We'll see?

I went to the gym yesterday for the first time in Ernest.
It's been three months and I needed to try out my new shoulder.

Well I did curls, rows, triceps, lat pulldowns, and finally bench press.

I can tell you Guys. It won't be long now till I'm back in shape. ;)
My bench press was a unbelievable 10 pounds! :s0140:

Oh the humanity! :D

Weds 9/7/16

I doubled my bench press. 20lbs now.
And the shoulder feels good.

I was trembling like a chi Wawa sh!ting a peach pit!
But I did it. ;)

Nice man!

I remember the the exhaustion that came with rehab and just lifting and extending my leg was super painful and felt strange being wiped out after something that should seem so simple.

I'll be in there and working on my leg strength next week so I'll be jumping into the same boat;).

Keep it up and don't over do it:cool:.

I joined Planet Fitness in our area late last year. I mostly spend some time on the tread mill but have done other exercises not too long ago. Due to some eye surgery this week, I've been told not to do anything that tends to cause any undo stress.
I'm also a senior citizen with a Silver Sneakers card and there's a Gold's Gym my son told me about that has a swimming pool and full size basketball court, as well as an indoor running track. So, I went by to check it out last night and will be making use of that card soon. (I ran track and played basketball back in junior and senior high school.)

If you aint taking the loooooooooong dirt nap. It aint too late. ;)

I know 30 year olds that have resigned themselves to being ''True'' senior citizens.
It's a sorry choice. :s0002:

He11. Age is just a number. It doesn't promise you anything? :s0070:

Darn right it's a sorry choice!
Yesterday its been six weeks to the day since a stroke took my right arm and leg. Started working to come back the second day...threw away walker three weeks ago for just using cane outside the house "as backup" when I do my "walks. Almost ready to resume shooting with my right hand again.

Thinking about asking my P.T. or Dr if I can get a prescription for my annual range membership
(you know...for improving hand/eye and strength/balance;))...maybe take up archery too?

Getting old ain't for Pussies...
...I'm only 64 now but when I get old, I plan to be ready for it.

Do it! You can then use your flex spending account, if you have one, to make the purchase; it's tax at least.

I've gotten a prescription for shoe insoles from a VA MD just for that reason. Another doc once told me he wrote a prescription for a hot tub because of these IRS rules.

I'm proud of you for not just rolling over. ;)

Sometimes a wake up call works in your favor. I know mine have.
