One School District's Security Upgrade: Facial Recognition, Tracking IDs and AR-15s

Interesting article. Edit: I really hate that WSJ requires either subscription or to log in to view articles...If someone with access could post the full thing that would be nice.

Section from article:

"The Texas City school district has spent $6.3 million in eight months on security measures to keep students safe. The dsitrict uses a facial recognition system to scan for people not allowed on school grounds, while IDs track the whereabouts of students and staff. Teachers also have cellphone panic buttons to alert police and soon will have special locks on classroom doors that can be activated remotely. Meanwhile, a newly expanded security team keeps 22 AR-15 rifles in their offices. "My philosophy is you fight fire with fire," said Mike Matranga, a former U.S. Secret Service agent who was hired as head of security for the school district and is leading these changes."

Create a situation whether real or promulgated, then ride in with a solution. Follow the $$

Intense facial recognition has been available on a wide scale for almost 20 years now.
A few retailers that I'm aware of use it for security.
Data centers that I occasionally visit have them, where if your face shows up on a camera where you don't have unescorted access, people come pay you a visit.
The coolest one associates your face with your vehicle, tracks location and associated access privileges, does gait analysis and a few other nifty things. I would not be surprised if they also used remote sensing to determine if you have a weapon.

$6.3M for security is nothing if a shooting happens. That's also peanuts for companies securing their prodigious intellectual property.

All the above is true as long as it is implemented correctly. One of the worst features of automated and super sassy software is complacency.
