I thought the same thing when I first learned of them. Virtually the same thing in effect. Its kinda like the bump stock of the full auto, lol.
IIRC some states classify assisted opener as switchblades? I cant remember but thought Wa. prohibited them?
Far as I know we have not, at least not yet. Have bought a LOT of them over the years and never had anyone who sells them say no. The places that sell auto knives will not sell here unless you prove you are an LEO or First Responder. The assisted they have no problem selling. Now of course if you are carrying pretty much any knife and some LEO wants to make a "thing" out of it? Probably lots of city, and or county laws across the state.

I never had any company not send an automatic knife to Oregon or Washington.

Some states you can own assisted openers but cant carry them, concealed...
I thought Oregon was one.

have a hard enough time following gun laws, gave up on knife laws. All I know is the bad guys are really bummed they cant carry either.

Just looked at Benchmade and did not go as far as putting one in my cart but, they did not have the red letter warning that they would not sell to WA anymore. Just wanted me to sign a waver stating I was responsible to know the laws. So they may well have relaxed at selling auto knives to us here. No doubt will lead to some drive by knifing :s0140:

Lol.

"any person who carries concealed upon the person any knife having a blade that projects or swings into position by force of a spring or by centrifugal force, any dirk, dagger, ice pick, slungshot, metal knuckles, or any similar instrument by the use of which injury could be inflicted upon the person or property of any other person, commits a Class B misdemeanor."

So open carry of said knives/weapons A-OK and encouraged ;) :s0140:

Apparently ice picks were so used frequently as murder weapons... (or more likely, they went through body armor more easily in prisons)

Edit. Not against law to own brass knuckles or openly carry them :s0064:

like anyone "open carries" a spring assisted folder. lol.

I had to look up "slungshot"....

The interesting thing is that there's not even a CHL holder exemption; only LEO on duty are exempt  like they have a need to conceal carry an ice pick, brass knuckles or slungshot? :s0140:
That's something I've always thought was crap. Leo should not get to have weapons I can't have.

Also, why would a Concealed Handgun License affect knives at all?

Wait a sec. It's illegal to carry a folder in your pocket?? Like the single blade type that you thumb just a bit and simultaneously fling it to flip the blade out into lock?

Is that what they mean by "centrifugal force"?

No, they're talking about butterfly knives and similar. You know that.

Ohhh... a balisong. (Had to look up "butterfly knife") I've actually don't remember ever seeing that kind of knife before. I've been in knife shops that probably had em, but it didn't "register".

Mine's fine. Good to know. :s0155:

Agreed. There on the E-Forms on ATF site is a button to have "Tax-Exempt, Law Enforcement" NFA applications. Meaning LE officers don't have to pay the tax to have SBRs, SBS, Destructive Devices; see 40mm grenade launchers and "anti-personnel" rounds such as tear gas, flashbangs, rubber batons/beanbags, and so forth. Maybe also dont have to pay tax for post-sample MGs A2

There's an argument from ORS 166.250 that says any firearm concealed is a crime, unless the person is licensed to conceal carry a handgun. Some assert that it only covers handguns, nothing else. Others assert that it may cover weapons in general; pointedly, "any firearm". Other States have "concealed Weapons permit/licenses"; which usually can also cover the knives/weapons discussed here.

Decades back I was talking to a guy from TX and at least at that time their permit allowed that. With the permit they could carry things that were considered "weapons" and not allowed by those who did not get a permit. It came up when discussing how this state has long called our permit Concealed Pistol Permit, rather than weapons permit.

No, LE AGENCIES dont have to pay NFA transfer taxes. Individual officers do although there is a means to fast ttrack the application
