I'd ask if the 2A means only the Government needs to protect itself from citizens but we all know that's how they see it

I would ask them then, that if citizens don't need to be armed to protect themselves, will the local, State, Federal be willing to take on paying out (of the individual politicians pockets not the general taxpayers funds) the life insurance policies on every murder victim, cover the hospital bills on every wounded victim of crime, and also provide armed personal security for every voter, not just the donors to their campaigns?

I think most politicians know exactly what the Second Amendment means.

When they make these statements, they know very well they are lying.

Their intention is to confuse the issue, and maybe/hopefully even convince others that their lies are the truth.

Do not make the mistake of thinking they are uninformed, ignorant or stupid. One does not get to their positions of power (especially an Attorney General) by being any of those things. Do not underestimate them.

I was watching old footage of the post Heller ruling, all the politicians claiming that SCOTUS got it wrong, Chief amongst them was Cankles who went off about it at length! The insight was enlightening:

Basically, they believe only what the progressive institutions of higher learning told them in their law classrooms, that the founding fathers never contemplated advances in technology, and that at best, it only covered hunting, in a very limited manor, subject to laws of the states. They don't believe what Justice Scalia wrote, they all claim he was wrong, they believe it is limited by what government says it means, and not it's limits ON government! That's the fundamental difference, the lefties believe it's been ruled incorrectly, and that only they understand it in its proper context, and damn Scalia and the Court!
They also know they could never get a convention of states to ratify changes, so they continue to push the issue through the ultra lefty states, funded by Soros and Bloomberg, through the NGO's like Gifford's and Every town, or Moms need action! Note how no real serious plays have been pushed outside a handful of ultra lefties in Congress, and a few Gov'ners and A.G's, that's because the NGO's have their marching orders, and the outliers like Cankles who are untouchables, can say and so whatever the hell they want, and nobody can dare counter them!!!

They may or may not believe that.

Being politicians, they lie almost all of the time. Sometimes to themselves.

Whether they believe it or not, it can be very hard to determine which way it is.

I have often said they are not stupid, and probably not ignorant, so I just assume they are lying as that is more often the case. It is also the safer assumption.

I trust you've also seen the bill to ban civilians from purchasing body armor.

To a few points made above: I didn't grow up around guns and grew up at the time that school shootings and other mass shootings became common. My parents were Christmas shopping at the Clackamas Town Center about ten years ago when some guy opened fire on people there. There was a time in my life when I would have agreed with a lot of the stuff Bonta and other gun control folks in the government are saying, but the fact of the matter is that the toothpaste isn't going back in the tube. Lots of folks have lots of weapons. It is what it is. The only question that remains at this point is whether you want the state to have a monopoly on violence or not. I don't.
