I avoid those damn ATM like that. When I need to use one I park before the damn thing so I have plenty of room, get out and walk up to it. I am of course armed.

In addition to the standard drive-thru lanes in the back of the building, my credit union has a card key entry system at the front door (where it's better lit, anyway). You swipe your debit card in a reader outside the front doors. It lets you into the vestibule, and the doors close behind you and lock. It has a lock-out feature so that no one else can come in, even someone else with a debit card, until you leave.

You conduct your business, and then when you approach the door, a sensor opens the door for you and you go about your day/night. Of course, I'm armed when I get out of my car to go up to the front doors, and my head is on a swivel both before entering (to see if anyone is lurking) and especially when I exit with my cash. I don't like the idea of being snuck up upon in a drive-thru lane where I am boxed in on at least two sides.

Welp, as I said, I scan the area to look for lurkers before I swipe my card to go inside, and my SA is even more heightened when I exit.
Also, I mentioned that my CU's doors lock after you enter, and don't re-open until you activate the motion sensor inside the vestibule (where you are), so I'm not worried about some thug with a stolen debit card accessing the reader while I'm in the fishbowl.
If some punkass thug wants to take me on after I exit the fishbowl, so be it.
μολὼν λαβέ ya know, only this time it's about my money and not my guns...

The ones I used to see LONG ago had windows all around so it was fine with me. Then I am armed of course. Seemed a lot better that being in a vehicle where you have to park so close you can't open your door and you are trying to use the machine while sitting there in the vehicle. From the first day I saw one of these drive up ones I did not like the idea at all. Far prefer to be standing outside vehicle where I can see and move since we no longer have the ones like Sobo was talking about. Of course I seldom use an ATM at all any more since so much is done on line. Pay goes direct to the bank. So once in a while I will use one if something comes up that I need some cash. Keep some at home and now and then have to "restock" as it gets used up.
All the stores here seem to have those stand alone ones here too. There is some charge to use them I think. Couple bucks or something? I would pay that before I would allow myself to be in some place like that guy was in.

I guess I should've mentioned for @P7M13 that the doors of the vestibule are clear glass from top to bottom.
I can see plenty before I go in, and before I come back out.

My credit union lets me use just about any ATM out there for free. All I need is a checking account, download my monthly statements, and make at least 18 EFT charges per month (was reduced by half during the scamdemic). Any fee that gets charged to me for using some other bank's ATM gets refunded to my account at the end of the month when my monthly interest gets credited. And no minimum balance required, either. Never do business with a bank...
