I will just get the 'single' check, but my kids will get the double. They need it more than I do. I am very glad to see all the provisions for extended/expanded UI benefits - that is what will really help the people who need it the most - an extra $600 per week for four months should really help.

The whole things stupid. Trillions of dollars to people AND corporations that should be able to weather this If they made better financial decisions. Like when financial experts recommend a six month buffer, this is why. People with a nicer newer vehicle than they need with a several hundred dollar a month weed and Starbucks habit shouldn't get it.

But a timbersled:)

Its "bad for the economy" if people didn't spend their money :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Edit. Think them as extending credit lines that eventually would have to be paid back one way or other

Yes it "should be" no big deal but, the problem is in the world we live in it is. A LOT of people are out of work or soon to be. A LOT of them will have nothing to carry them over. Leave a huge portion of the populace out in the cold and guess who they will vote for? Of course if they get the Socialism that "sounded " so good they will soon find out they shot themselves in the foot. Sadly it's very hard to gain freedom back once people have willingly given it up. :(

I got laid off at the end of '08, along with everyone else it seemed. It was a rough time. I took advantage of Trade Act benefits and went back to school.

Several people told us at the start to go apply for food stamps (two small kids at the time), but we thought for sure we wouldn't qualify. Food stamps are for poor people. Even after the crash we still had some equity in our home, and some savings in the bank. Eighteen months later my wife did go down to see about food stamps, and they told us we could have been getting them the whole time! We had been "doing the right thing", scrimping and saving, working hard, and found out we really didn't need to.

During that time we also applied for the Obama mortgage refinance thing. I kept asking what the criteria was to find out if we qualified. They kept telling us to apply, get on the program for the trial period, and then they would tell us whether we qualified or not. Against my better judgement we did that. Fortunately I also made sure that we had the money in the bank to make up the difference just in case. I kept calling and asking because they would never give me a straight answer.

Four months later they finally determined that we did not qualify! They wanted their money right now, and were not nice about it. They even sent a guy around to knock on the door and make sure we were still there, and charged me for that "service". I paid them so fast it made their head spin. The reason we didn't qualify? We were too responsible, and hadn't made any late payments.

I have a one year buffer in my checking account and what was supposed to be a lifetime buffer in my IRAs and 401K. I also am several months ahead on my mortgage payments. That is after putting about $10K into a car I bought for my daughter that then needed repairs, and then paying about $30K in med/dental bills last year. Ok, still good - as long as I have a job.

But I did not plan on losing 20% of the value in the retirement funds - those were supposed to be for my daughter, not me, but I had counted on them being a backup if needed.

Combine that with two out of three of my family now being unemployed and on unemployment, myself now being without health insurance (I need to get medicare now - another expense).

It just has all happened at a very inconvenient time: first one person was unemployed, ok, I was working, I can back them up. But then I lose $80K (on paper) from my backup. Ok, I was still working, I can just work longer than I planned. Nope - now I am unemployed and I can't touch my retirement funds without taking a 20% loss if I cash any of it out.

Add on top of that, COVID, a coming recession, both of which make my plans for selling my property iffy at best (who buys property at my best price, when there is a recession and their job is iffy?).

The check is meh - nothing.

The extended/expanded UI benefits? BIG deal, for all of the people I know that were just laid off unexpectedly (5 people at work, 1 person I know online who was barely making it, often working multiple jobs to make ends meet, now is stuck in N. Dakota unemployed still snowing, getting $260 a week on unemployment).

No, if we are smart, we won't go out and spend that money on a Timbersled, but we should be able to at least keep a roof over our heads, food in the fridge and the lights on. That will make a difference. Hopefully enough that it won't be a repeat of 2008.

I have wanted one for years, but now I think I won't ever have one unless I get a job and one that pays better than my last job, and even then, I would probably have a heart attack riding it. Last night packing up all my stuff and moving it to my car before the doors locked at 6 PM produced angina and I was going to take a nitro pill if it didn't go away. Can you imagine what riding a bike in the snow would do to me?

I'm confident that your skills will still be in demand once everyone comes out of their bunkers.

Doesn't help right now and I used to think that way when I lost my job, but then discovered that there were thousands of people just like me on the UI roles competing for the same jobs. It is even worse now - I am 66 and the tech sector has a bad rep for age discrimination.

You've reached full retirement age. Go for it! Top SS benefit is $2400/mo plus Medicare.

Stupid idea after seeing what the heck a timbersled is.... if anyone still have the much ballyhooed 3 wheel ATVs (c'mon, you know what I'm talking abt ); maybe a modernized take on the Klein Kettenkraftrad semitracked motorcycle?:s0064: Basically swap a coupla of those modular tracked units on the back of the 3 wheeler and add a larger cargo deck :s0108::s0064:

Back on topic. I wonder for those who don't plan on keeping their checks; maybe donate to certain causes as mentioned somewhere above, and maybe to NWFA? :) could be anonymous.

It won't be until next year unless a deal too good to pass up comes along. That's the only thing I really want though. Unlike a sled, you simply can't get them stuck. Best way to get around the backcountry in the winter IMO.
