At one of the clean-ups afterward, one of the guys stepped up with a S&W 460 revolver. My opinion of it, from about 5 positions down the firing line, was there was disturbance in the FORCE! The line of guys all backed up! It had a halo like that, though not exactly like that. I think it was air molecules being rearranged and getting the hell out of there..

I had a 5" 500. The blast from that gun was felt in every direction.

The fire ring/halo is called a toroidal vortex. The gasses inside the ring are traveling faster than on the outside causing it to start to curl around.
I have many pictures of this happening with my Desert Eagle.

At another clean-Up, forum member @FordPrefect had a S&W 500 with a long barrel and scoped. Shoting some crazy heave lead. 400 grain hard cast, maybe. I shot that. It wasn't so bad. More of an issue holding the gun out in front of you aiming. But I have Weeny Arms.

At another clean-Up, forum member @FordPrefect had a S&W 500 with a long barrel and scoped. Shoting some crazy heave lead. 400 grain hard cast, maybe. I shot that. It wasn't so bad. More of an issue holding the gun out in front of you aiming. But I have Weeny Arms.

I have three main loads: a 350 grain, a 500 grain, and a 700 grain. The 500 and 700-grain are hard cast.

One is a modern-day what-if black powder shooter that is not exactly a replica of anything, but has hints of a number of designs.

The other was a perfectly good design based on the Super Redhawk and totally screwed up in order to conform to the requirements of legality in England, Scotland and Wales, but not Northern Ireland, where they can still have guns that don't need a 12" bbl and a bit sticking out of the grip, like this one.

Ah, a little history lesson, if you don't mind.

Back in 1996 we had our first and so far only school massacre, in which a known pedophile, with guns that had been acquired legally but under debatable circumstances, entered the gym of Dunblane Infants School in Scotland and slaughtered sixteen first-grade kids and their teacher who was killed trying to protect them.

The killer then allegedly killed himself, leaving a slaughterhouse behind him as well as a couple of dozen injured children.

The result, here in UK, where we don't DO this kind of thing, was almost instant.

PM John Major started the ball rolling by banning all centre-fire handguns - lost the general election - and Tony B. Liar finished it off by banning .22cal in a blood-fueled crusade led by that famous killer - Sean Connery. Hypocrisy doesn't come into it......

For complex reasons, Northern Ireland was excused the ban, and ordinary handguns can be bought and used over there.

Here, some bright and nameless soul came up with the idea of making handguns with barrels 12" or longer, and extending the grip with an extension of some kind, making it 24" overall, and therefore classed as a 'short rifle' Naturally that term become obsolete, and they are now generally called 'long-barrelled revolvers'. Almost everything we did with a handgun is now done with Gallery Rifle.

The UK Olympic pistol team NOW trains back here in UK, after a long absence, but in a guarded and secured range................. yeah, right.

Any calibre qualifies, providing that it is MADE IN THE FACTORY WITH THE LONG BARREL AND ADDITIONAL DOO-DAD AT THE BACK - this is immoveable, BTW.

True, you CAN remove it, but then you would be in illegal possession of a Section 1 firearms, and qualifying for a 5 - 8 stretch at one of His Majesty's prisons.

Semi-autos are limited to .22LR. You' need to do some looking up on YouTube - there's a lot of cover.

A revolver like mine can be had for about $3000, no scope though. They are VERY rare.

55,000 of us lost all our proper handguns - about 100,000 handguns were involved. Government is very tight-lipped about the final cost, but a bit of math and imagination can land you with around £20 Million or thereabouts in reparations. Remember that was OUR money to begin with, right?

Dozens of gun clubs closed, as did a score or so of gun stores. THE finest leather combat pistol gear maker on earth, VERY popular on the USA, upped sticks and moved to South Africa. Others, less mobile, went to the wall. Specialist handgun accessory companies disappeared instantly.

The end result was a farce. Having proclaimed the 'UK was a safer place' now HE'D taken all these guns 'off the street', armed crime climbed to an all-time high in 2014, where it has remained steady. None of OUR guns were EVER 'on the street'.

What is particularly enlightening about their mentality is that, apparently, your black powder pistol isn't really all that dangerous and so remains unscathed by the bureaucrats.

It is a well-known 'fact' that getting killed historically' was quite a different experience from that of today.

Well they'd still work for their main task! That gathering was a clean-up at the Salmonberry Pit. With barbeque provided by Oregon Hunters association.

Over Labor Day weekend, my wife and I and some friends went camping on some private property in Scio, Oregon.
I got some pictures of my friend shooting two of my 357's, and using the same load, my 6 inch GP 100 made a big flash, but my 3 inch SP 101 produced fire halos. I have never seen this effect before, and I thought it was kind of cool.

Back in 1969, I was with some US Navy PBRs on the Saigon River when we encountered some VC trying to float a homemade mine into our path. The PBR on the right detonated it with .50 cal fire:


Right after that, the VC opened up on us with small arms from a bunker and a LAW rocket fired from our boat hit it:

Pictures like this are really special. My neighbor for some years here in NE Portland was a Viet Nam Vet.. He was on one of the boats that did on water repair to, I'm assuming, what you were on when if/when you had mechanical failures. He had some stories. He passed a few years ago from Lymphoma.

Pictures like this are really special. My neighbor for some years here in NE Portland was a Viet Nam Vet.. He was on one of the boats that did on water repair to, I'm assuming, what you were on when if/when you had mechanical failures. He had some stories. He passed a few years ago from Lymphoma.

I'd be willing to bet your neighbor's lymphoma was caused by Agent Orange. All of the former members of my team are gone, now.
