That was my first thought too; it looks like a break open pellet rifle. The position of the rear sight is a giveaway.

Yea I agree it's a big jump to "lives were saved" based on so little info. Now if car drivers come back and say they have actual bullet holes in their cars or someone was hurt then we would know for sure it's a real gun and not an airgun. But it's actually a pretty mild response on next door considering it's Portland where they think any gun is spawned by the devil.

Rabbits are more out during the dark hours if near the city.
This guy could have been shooting Eurasian Collared Dove.
We are overrun with them. They have an annoying call, eat good and are unprotected since they are an invasive species.

Shooting pellet guns within city limits is illegal, but he had the perfect rig for shooting those doves.

Yes... but, the media would lllllllllllllove a story like this. White dude with a gun (a "cannon" in OPs follow up wording), scaring an innocent spandex wearing cyclist who saves the world from climate change one pedal at a time... the perfect villain to incite fear!
