Wait?
Didn't you guys give us ''feet'' and ''inches''? :D

Surely did! However, the people running the UK back in 1972 decided that metric was the way to go, so it was adopted for most everything.

Except all road signs are in miles, parts thereof, or MPH, and most other road signs are metric, they are ignored.

Sure, gasoline is sold in litres, but we ignore that, too, and fill up or don't.

Food weight is in metric, but we ignore that - we buy sliced cooked meat, well, I do - by pointing and asking for ten or twelve or whatever slices of that stuff.

Y'see, the 'metric users' measure fuel by economy using TWO variables - not a good thing in math, unless you also have a constant. And there isn't one when you measure how many litres it takes to travel 100 km. See, we don't go ANYWHERE in KM - we use miles, so telling us that our car used 7 litres to travel 100 kms is so much shi- , uh, gobbledegook. Using ONE gallon gets you n miles makes far more sense to most folks.

Meanwhile, over in Wales, where the original language of the Island is still spoken every day, they don't even use 'miles', but 'Milltir' - Welsh for 'one thousand paces'. Yup, the Welsh use the old word for the Roman mile, but brought into modern-day speech as a 'mile'. They also use the word 'llath' for 'yard' - 'trai troeddfed - 'three feetlongs'. So the Welsh mile is really a thousand paces, hence the 'mill' - Latin Mille = one thousand.

The only everyday thing we use the metric system for is money.

Same as you. ;)

PS - this post is also available in Welsh if required.
