I snagged the last four boxes of .223 that the local bimart had for $10 a box. Spoke to a friend the other day who said a year or so ago he bought 1000 wolf for $79 to run through his sk. I'm a little late to the whole gun ammo thing as I usually spend all my cash on cars and car parts, now I'm investing in guns and ammo.

As a dealer, the price is through the roof as well.

I buy my ammo at Bi-Mart, Wal-Mart, and off other shooters.

It is cheaper than buying from my distributors.

I stopped selling ammo. I just don't feel right charging $19 a box for American Eagle plinking ammo.

I just buy what I can now for personal use.

GunCrafter's in Salem has some decent ammo deals but they will only allow 1 box of ammo purchase per customer. And rather or not that is per day isn't even listed on that sign. sad times...

I wish I would have invested in ammo loading equipment back when I could have better afford it. I would be scrapp'n bullets together left and right, giving me something to do too. oh well

I know, you beat me to that 9mm couple days back. :s0129:

You would still have a problem because you cannot get primers now so this still sucks. I have my presses but ran out of primers. If you buy a new Hornady you get a 1000 free bullets but then you need primers so we are stuck. Luckily I have enough ammo to last a while.

You have to buy online. I shoot Wolf and Bear ammo from my AR's ( say what you will about steel case ammo. If you modify your AR correctly, it will shoot anything reliable). In the beginning you could buy 1000 rounds for $190 in town. Now I spend $280 w/shipping for the same ammo. I search the boards for post religiously and buy even when I technically don't need it. It all gets shot up sometime. It's the same deal with gasoline. When you keep the tank topped off, you can be picky on your price, but when you start running out of gas, you are forced to buy what is close to you.

Coctailer is correct. People think we are gouging, but the reallity of it is, we are having to pay more for it. I have someone who is upset for what I am asking for my ammo in the classifieds, but I cannot compete with the big box stores. I buy from a distributor because I do not have the funds to purchase the quanity needed to go direct to the manufacturer with most brands. I guess bottom line is, if you do not like the price, just don't buy it. If the price is that ridiculous, in the end the dealer loses because it won't sell and his money will tied up in that product until it does sell. It's just like the Wolf 7.62x39 ammo. I can remember when it used to be $79 for a 1000 rounds. I now pay over $200 for a 1000 rounds at WHOLESALE. You don't have to like it, we just have to deal with it.

I was told by my local Bi Mart person that some people have figured out when the shipment comes in and they have been going from store to store buying it all and selling it the gun shows. They were trying to come up with a store policy to limit the amount they sell to each customer.

What is crazy is $30 bricks of .22LR.

With Ammo - I guess that it is Supply and demand - I have heard at 2 different places - that Primers are backorder 8 months.

That Ammo Demand is up 50 to 80 Times previous normal demand.

CMP (Citizen Marksmanship Program ) In January was taking orders for June Delivery of Aquila .30 Carbine FMJ.....

It's actually called the CIVILIAN MARKSMANSHIP PROGRAM. :)

In response to the original question:
I pride my self on being a capitalist. Just because I am the one getting screwed in the deal this time does not change that fact. It is very inconvenient for me for someone to go into Bi-Mart and buy all the ammo before I got there, but it is his right to do so and if he can make a profit at my tardiness then so be it. Congratulations to him.

We still live in a free country and it really bothers me to hear all of this socialist talk. I have to ask, would it make you feel better if the government took control of the ammo distribution and made sure you got your fair share?

I appologize if I was too rude or blunt, but this is America.

and I love AMERICA

Where are the thugs and gangsters getting their ammo? Maybe we are getting starved out to get at those guys. Their MO will be to raid small sporting goods retailers for the ammo and cause even more suppliers to go under. This will make it harder for the regular citizens to get the supplies for shooting and reloading.
If this is truly supply and demand, it would seem that the ammo producers would be increasing production and hiring, not cutting back like others.
If there is some type of government conspiracy to suck all the ammo and shooting supplies out of access to the public, someone would have "ratted" out the deal by now. Does anyone really know where the stuff is going?

I agree, I don't like the high prices either. But that's the way it goes. I just went to bimart and they had some ammo and I bought ONE box. To be honest, If I had more cash on me I would of bought it all.

yes it is Ammo Day at Bi-Mart

I was just at the Bi-Mart in Winston, Oregon. They have several boxes of 9mm, 357, 38spl, and a few others. I bought one box of 357.

I am with you, if I could afford it I would have bought all 6 boxes of 357 but I could only afford 1.

Just got home from Bi Mart in Hillsboro, and spoke with 2 different managers, and they told me that in their meeting today, that it will be 6-9 months or longer before they get back to any kind of regular shipments of all ammo, primers, reloading supplies etc,,,,,,,,

They were told that the ammo producers are still producing the same amount of ammo and supplies, but demand is skyrocketing (obviously). Also told to me is that currently when Bi Mart does receive ammo and supplies, they are shipping it to stores on a rotating basis, ie Tigard, Tualatin, one shipment, Aloha, Hillsboro, and Forest Grove the next, Gresham and Sandy, and on down the line.

So it looks likes luck and patience should pay off, but this is getting ridiculous.

On a side note, an Intersting stat they also gave me was that from Jan 1, 2008 up until the election the Bi Mart chain sold 900,000 10/22 rifles, since the election they have sold 3.925 MILLION!!!! If the rest of the firearms are selling at this increased rate, it is no wonder there is an ammo shortage.

If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

i went to visit my cousin at his shop about a week ago. he had just got in a case of the same american eagle 9mm fmj as th op mentioned. he was pricing it at $15 a box. $20 seems a bit steep, but i wouldn't quite call it gouging.

On Tuesday I drove 78 miles total to buy 3 boxes of 115g FMJ 9mm. $20/box in two different stores.

In both instances, it was my first visit to the shop. Very nice shops, very nice people.

But for $20/box, shouldn't I get some free beef or something?
