Just wanted to throw out that the dollar tree has some knife sharpeners that work surprisingly well, bought a couple dozen just to throw in some of my gear stashes. Figured with hunting season around the corner some newer hunters/guys who haven't mastered the whetstone (like me) could use a tip.

Just tried it on an old SS cheap knife that was getting pretty dull. It got a little sharper after maybe 5minutes. It defiantly works.:s0155:
Good info to have on hand!

Freehand on a combination stone from the hardware store, about an 8 incher is plenty long. Don't use oil, use water and you will be fine. I mean oil is fine but a heck of a lot messier than water.

Second on the Lansky sharpener. A guy on this site was giving a brand new one away and I lucked out.
My knives have never been sharper.
They make a field version I believe.

As a stand by sharpener, try the top edge of your truck/car door window. Roll it down leaving a little exposed and draw the edge towards you and pushing away with the reverse side, it works in a pinch and rather well too.

Wow that's a new one. Definitely will have to give it a shot.
