"Reid supporters set up a hospitality tent Saturday in the parking lot of a Searchlight casino, about a mile from the tea party rally. The Senate leader planned to spend part of the day at a new shooting range in Las Vegas with National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre."

The NRA supports gun rights and those legislators that are pro-gun. It makes no difference who their party affilliation is.

Senator Reid is rated "A" with the NRA on gun rights, I believe, and is very pro-gun.

When the NRA let Bush impose the Assault weapons ban in the 80s...the NRA became either traitors, ineffective, or just another organization that serves its self and not the members...

I DO remember Bush Senior slurring "seemeye-autoomatiks" and speculating that they should all be banned, but I DON'T remember Bush Senior pushing any legislation to that effect because he was rightly afraid of the power of the NRA. It was CLINTON and his majority Democratic congress who enacted the "Assault Weapons Ban" in the 1990's (1992?).

The NRA fought both of them tooth-and-nail, and the results were mid-term election landslides of pro-gun candidates being elected to end that Democratic majority to cripple Clinton's remaining years as president. The NRA DID THAT!

And guess who is largely responsible for recently electing a Republican Senator as Ted Kennedy's replacement in vastly Democratic Massachussets? The Republican had an NRA rating of "A+" and the Democratic candidate who expected to be coronated had an NRA rating of "F". It was the NRA campaign that elected the first Republican from Massachusetts in, what was it, sixty years? The NRA DID THAT.

The NRA does not "let" anyone diminish gun rights---it fights it every time in recent history! The only times it has compromised were in 1932 (1933?) to require special licenses and taxes for fully automatic guns and short barrel long guns, and in 1968 to ban cheap pistols from import. As for being "ineffective" the NRA has accomplished an amazing amount of political clout in the last two decades---and nobody else could have done nearly as much.............................elsullo :s0155:

You are PARTIALLY however, except the part about the NRA compromising. They compromise quite OFTEN in the name of politics.

Assault weapon ban was in 1994...

Rest of your post is pretty much spot on...

QUOTE]

This is how it is and how it should be in my opinion. The NRA's job is to protect the second amendment, promote shooting sports, hunting and gun safety. The NRA should avoid entangling itself in political issues that do not involve firearms and most definitely should not pledge allegiance to a particular party.

Correlation does not imply causality.

No - but it's easy enough to go back and look at what various groups did at what time... and I strongly believe you'll see his analysis stand up nicely.

Except the part where he said NRA has only compromised twice. NOT TRUE. Regardless of what you think about the NRA, the fact is they do compromise on our 2nd amendment rights year after year. I am not here to debate whether the NRA is good or bad...this is a VERY grey area imho..but they do compromise our gun rights quite often....:

Senator Reid is rated "A" with the NRA on gun rights, I believe, and is very pro-gun.

And Senator Dirty Harry Reid is F rated by Gun Owners of America...
The Only No-Compromise Second Amendment Lobby In Washington...
http://www.gunowners.org/

I live in Las Vegas, Nevada and while 42,000 to 50,000 people were at the Dump Harry Reid Tea Party in Searchlight, Nevada

the NRA was arm in arm with Dirty Harry Reid (D-NV) & Dina Titus (D-NV)
And about 12 other people, at a photo op at a token opening ceremony of Clark County Shooting Park...

Whom brought us the Anti-Gun, Anti-Second Amendment, Unconstitutional ObamaCare...

Dirty Harry Reid (D-NV) is personally responsible for getting Obama's plethora of Anti-Second Amendment Nominees approved by the U.S. Senate, 7 Hard-Core Anti-Gunners on Obama's first day...
They don't even get voted on if they don't get Dirty Harry's blessing...

For Starters...Eric Holder, Hillary Clinton, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Van Johnson, Cass Sunstein sound familiar?

FIRE HARRY REID (D-NV) !!!

I like the fact that GOA and the NRA play "good cop, bad cop" I think it works well for gun owners. With the Second amendment group from Seattle in the middle.

The NRA is the only gun rights group that is large enough to pull much weight with Congress, but at that it only has a small % of total gun owners. If the NRA has 4-6 million members out of 80+million gun owners its not going to scare members of Congress too much.

If all hunters, gun collectors, target shooters and other that are pro-gun would join up with the NRA we would be the elephant in the living room and have a major influence with Congress.

It's called "CONTROLLED OPPOSITION" - do just enough good to be considered credible, then buckle when something really important comes along... GOA - No compromise.

Funny - I didn't see GOA funding the Heller or McDonald cases...

... and I'd consider both of those "really important"...

(says the lifetime NRA and GOA member).
