Don't do it a lot. Every now and then probably won't damage the gun. Just don't do it all the time.

A firing pin hits hard, and should only strike a soft metal like brass. A rimfire gun has the firing pin strike the hard steel breech if there is no round in the chamber, and it can easily damage the firing pin. If you want dry-fire practice put a spent shell in the chamber so that the firing pin has softer metal to hit............................elsullo

Use #4/6 drywall anchors from the hardware store for a snap cap. (A tip I picked up from another NWF member)

Dry firing a .22 will generally damage the chamber before the firing pin. The fact that a .22 firing pin is generally shaped like a chisel doesn't help. Constant battering against the chamber will peen a burr into the chamber and the gun will have problems feeding and extracting. The gun will then need to be taken to a gunsmith to have the burr ironed out.
