Will be heading to Idaho for a trip soon and don't know how things work. I know Idaho recognizes Oregon CHL but I'll be in Orofino for a few days and it's inside the Nez Perce reservation. Anybody live there or have info about this situation? Thanks
In Oregon I know it's illegal to carry on the res or casino . I don't know if it's up to the tribe to decide or if it's federal law but you might want to find out for sure.
Specifically, in Oregon you need the tribal elders' explicit permission to carry on their rez or casino. For Idaho even the frontier carry page calls it a "gray area" :
Gun Laws of Idaho
Orofino is not reservation land. There are reservation lands close by but not there. It was 120 years ago but was part of the land sale the tribe was allowed to do by the Supreme Court in the early 1900's.
I have spent a lot of time in Idaho and in Orofino in particular. Always CC'd. Was just there a few weeks ago fishing. Don't worry about the Res. Idaho is super firearm friendly. Have fun and visit The North Fork Cafe for a great burger and The Ponderosa for really good steaks.
Lets all remember rule Number One here please...Thank you.
Andy
That is indeed a very nice area, but not confined to just Orofino. Grangeville has always been on my radar for retirement. Close to my friends in Orofino, and more access to some of the forest areas I like to hunt and fish, like the South Fork of the Clearwater and Elk City.
Grangeville is a wonderful area (my great uncle owned it in the 1870's) The town is very healthy and on the edge of the magnificent Idaho wilderness country. Close to the Salmon, Snake and Clearwater rivers. It has a good small hospital, better airport, great stores and history. I have 4 generations there in the cemetery. There are several nice towns on the Camas prairie but Grangeville is the largest. Orofino feels a bit claustrophobic by comparison being in the bottom of the canyon on the river. Go a couple of miles out of town South past Mt Idaho (which has a ski Area) and she will find all the woods and mountains she wants.Grangeville was nice too, it looked like it was doing a little better economically. The wife wasn't interested at all, it looked too flat and treeless for her. I wish she would have at least given it a chance. McCall reeked of a tourist town, we lasted 15 minutes and drove on...

Drive out towards RedRiver Hot Springs past Elk City down to the Salmon river. Magnificent country.I'm going to keep working the idea and try to stay there next year and have her at least give it a couple days. We actually liked how Orofino is tucked in the canyons but Grangeville felt like a healthier community. Orofino felt like it was treading water, not dying but not going anywhere either.
