Will be heading to Idaho for a trip soon and don't know how things work. I know Idaho recognizes Oregon CHL but I'll be in Orofino for a few days and it's inside the Nez Perce reservation. Anybody live there or have info about this situation? Thanks

In Oregon I know it's illegal to carry on the res or casino . I don't know if it's up to the tribe to decide or if it's federal law but you might want to find out for sure.

Specifically, in Oregon you need the tribal elders' explicit permission to carry on their rez or casino. For Idaho even the frontier carry page calls it a "gray area" :

Gun Laws of Idaho

It says to contact the tribal authorities. Though they can't enforce any of their laws on you they can enforce state and federal laws and legally confiscate your weapon if they deem you are trespassing.

So just call the tribal information line.

Orofino is not reservation land. There are reservation lands close by but not there. It was 120 years ago but was part of the land sale the tribe was allowed to do by the Supreme Court in the early 1900's.

I have spent a lot of time in Idaho and in Orofino in particular. Always CC'd. Was just there a few weeks ago fishing. Don't worry about the Res. Idaho is super firearm friendly. Have fun and visit The North Fork Cafe for a great burger and The Ponderosa for really good steaks.

Had a great time in Orofino. You know it's a gun friendly zone when the public library is part of a raffle for an AR15. Nice cabin, nice people, Northfork Cafe, Pizza Factory, and Ponderosa all were great. We were on a trip to scout for a place to live when we're empty nesters. Our first pick is in the coast range of Oregon or Washington because we like the rain but Orofino got a thumbs up as a potential alternate, especially considering where the politics are headed here.

That is indeed a very nice area, but not confined to just Orofino. Grangeville has always been on my radar for retirement. Close to my friends in Orofino, and more access to some of the forest areas I like to hunt and fish, like the South Fork of the Clearwater and Elk City.

Grangeville was nice too, it looked like it was doing a little better economically. The wife wasn't interested at all, it looked too flat and treeless for her. I wish she would have at least given it a chance. McCall reeked of a tourist town, we lasted 15 minutes and drove on...

Grangeville is a wonderful area (my great uncle owned it in the 1870's) The town is very healthy and on the edge of the magnificent Idaho wilderness country. Close to the Salmon, Snake and Clearwater rivers. It has a good small hospital, better airport, great stores and history. I have 4 generations there in the cemetery. There are several nice towns on the Camas prairie but Grangeville is the largest. Orofino feels a bit claustrophobic by comparison being in the bottom of the canyon on the river. Go a couple of miles out of town South past Mt Idaho (which has a ski Area) and she will find all the woods and mountains she wants.

I'm going to keep working the idea and try to stay there next year and have her at least give it a couple days. We actually liked how Orofino is tucked in the canyons but Grangeville felt like a healthier community. Orofino felt like it was treading water, not dying but not going anywhere either.

Drive out towards RedRiver Hot Springs past Elk City down to the Salmon river. Magnificent country.

My uncle took up residence outside Orofino decades ago after he retired from his years around the globe. He said it was the best of everything he wanted in a small town.

Friends stayed at a place near town called "Konkolville Motel" that impressed them enough they plan on another visit.

McCall is a sad travesty of tourist haven/ski resort mangling the lives of otherwise normal residents. They do/did have a marvelous antique golf course in the middle of old residential area, surrounded by what passes for giant trees in Idaho. I was prevailed upon to golf with some friends. There was a marvelous short hole that was about ?75 yards?? . The little hill was so steep in front of the tee box, you could see the top of the flag in the green cup. (Sorry about whatever you call those things, I retired from my golfing career--27 games played--long ago & don't recall the vocabulary of the game)

Just before Grangeville you can get to the Salmon River. Pine bar was a nice place to spend a day, or two. And I second Red river hot springs and Burgdorf hot springs out of Mccall.
