I wouldn't say they are over rated, If it makes you feel better and better protected then go for it. Maybe if I lived in an urban combat zone I'd want to have some as well. These days I do conceal carry a handgun but am mostly interested in hunting and target shooting so my self protection thoughts lean more that way. Basically it's more important to me to not die of a heart attack hiking in the woods with too much gear than to be ready for TEOTWAWKI.

If I lived in a heavily populated area I think a good battle belt would be worth the money. Cops go on duty every day with a belt full of what they need to fight criminals. Our criminals are pretty much the same as their but we don't have the job of dealing with the thugs. Our rigs would be considered an insurance policy for just in case.

Fortunately for me I stay out of the areas that you need a lot of insurance.

Mostly from what I have seen a group of 'Boys' that have a "Totally Not Friends Of Dorothy" ;) name for their group, but a bunch of them only have the carriers with no plates which *might* be because DV and BA don't mix well under WA law
While that's a slightly different topic than the casual home owner wanting body armor, those "boys" are the ones who will get the tacticool gear banned.

These "Boys" are neither LE or security
So what?

If citizens shouldn't be allowed to have body armor, carriers, chest rigs, gear, even military camo.. then LE/Security should not be allowed either, and only the SWAT/Tactical teams but it has to be non military ; IE... no MOLLE, no Multicam.

Edit. I'm fairly sure that there's a lot of people who would like that to happen, force LE and even security to not look like military personnel, storm Troopers. And the like... I distinctly remember a lot of talk about "the militarization of police" during the Obama years....

If it gets more young'uns interested in joining military/NG as well as into guns and 2A... then I'm all for not banning gear :D

Militia Act of 1792, while long expired and replaced with Selective Service...

Required at the time...

That able bodied people 18-45 (white men at that time); procure and own, possess muskets and rifles of a suitable caliber (at the time, .54 caliber I think?), or equivalent or better than that used by other militaries

Enough powder and balls, or enough paper cartridges for rifles (no less than 20 to a box?)

Have good quality powder flask and good supply of patches, good quality cartridge box or pouch for balls

Also a good haversack or similar for rations?

Be available for call to duty

Be able to be mustered for training.

Now; text, history, tradition....

If we were to apply that to today..

Able bodied American citizens who aren't felon convicted for the most part... should be able to acquire the following things, at the minimum, (without licenses or permits IMO)

M4 carbines and M16 rifles
Light machine guns
The ammunition for these
Grenade launchers if desired
The grenades for them
Same quality optics and night vision devices, no restrictions
Body armor and carriers as used by military (I honestly think this and ammo are basically all we can currently get, along with some optics for way more money???)

And if one can afford ..

Drones of same quality/accuracy

Vehicles used by military, if can afford (oh I can see this now, drive a M1A1, or M-ATV, MRAP, etc off the lot, pay 45% APR interest with no down! :s0140: )
Soooo....
At that time 1790's....
60 rounds of worth of powder and ball ...
Or cartridges if a Musket.*
Tomahawk and or knife if a Rifleman ( US military rifles of that time , did not take a bayonet )
Bayonet if armed with a Musket.
Muskets were in the .68 - .80 caliber range...most tried to get within the .69 - .75 range....
Fusil and Fowlers could also be used...most were in the .62 - .68 caliber range.
Fusil and Fowlers were single barrel smooth bores...some were adapted to take a bayonet.
Rifles averaged around .45 - .58 caliber.
The US issued "Comnon Rifle " / Contract rifle was in the .50 - 52 caliber range...later upped to .54 caliber.

*Cartridges , paper , one each :D
Paper wrapped around a Musket charge usually around 90 grains...with...
Shot of various sizes or...
A single round ball or...
"Buck and Ball "...a single large round ball...with 6-8 smaller round balls / buckshot

At that time...
One could be fined if one should show up for Militia Muster and did not have a well maintained ( regulated ) Musket / Fusil /Fowler or Rifle...as well as being fined if one did not have the rest of the above items...again the "well regulated" clause.
Regulated being well maintained and equipped.

So basically... parity of arms and equipment with the military of the time...

Applying that to today with Bruen;

M4s, M16s, M7 and M9 bayonets, M9 and M1911/replacement/equivalent handguns,

Ammo, magazines,
Cleaning kits
Body armor and carriers
Gear to carry all that

And fine people for not having good/serviceable gear or arms when mustered for training/exercises?

Because context that's what. Koda asked who was dressing up like that in public. I pointed out a specific group of individuals that do dress up like that in public and no they are not LE or security and his reply was that those non-law-enforcement or security types are the ones that will scare law makers into passing laws, banning all sorts of stuff

As a standalone comment I totally agree with what you said, I also agree that one enforcement and security shouldn't have access to stuff that the common folk don't

And these "boys" and the III%ers are still citizens.

Got to accept that there are loonies and crazies in the general population, and that they aren't good enough of an excuse to disarm, or ban equipment and fabric items from the rest

Plus... I have a business interest in keeping the body armor, chest rigs, carriers, battle belts, pouches, even packs... not banned :D

Who's walking around dressed like this?
Every right wing protest group.
Is it fantasy or possible experience that many, many Americans have seen first hand? Don't discount what others might know that you don't.

A small investment with relatively nothing to lose. Skipping one weekend getaway would pay for it. There are plenty of examples from mostly peaceful countries, where mobs have taken over. Temporary or not, if you get caught up you are painfully on your own as we see year on year now.

Unfortunately, the most likely people who need the gear are taught to hate it and instead wait for the help that won't come in time.

Painting with a broad brush there. It's not just the right wingers gearing up.

State may ban all the gear but will lose in court, bearing arms has to include the gear needed to bear them.

As long as we have a blue state government the fight for our rights will be constant and costly.

Most of the states problems could be solved with a fair election but that won't happen.

Saying that "right wing" conservatives show up dressed like that, shows that the commentor actually does not go those protests.

If you're one of those that gets involved with what's going on, you'll recognize the others at most every meeting. If you just like to hang out and sound tough on forums, you'll be posting pictures of places you've never been. You're calling yourself out, just like you've done over and over again.

Why leave out the leftist groups?
Mostly because of their comparative rarity and they are emulating the rightest goons. However, the main reason was just that's were I've seen the most body armor. I live by the CHOP and commuted through it. No armor.
