I don't own any Apple products and don't plan to. I have an Echo Dot I received for free for signing up for Sirius radio. I live alone and when my girlfriend comes over, I unplug it if it isn't already unplugged.

"recordings of couples having sex"

See, who says technology cannot be interesting? :p

In all seriousness, to quote Scott McNealy, founder of Sun Microsystems, and an early pioneer in tech, "You have zero privacy anyway. Get over it." That seems a little defeatist, but there is more than a little truth to the statement. :(

Hey, if they used tortoise noises of two tortoises having sex for the Jurassic Park Trex sounds. Maybe Apple will use what they have on my wife and I for a future upcoming movie!

Ill be famous!

Also, I'm 100% shocked, just darn shocking information you have here.

Next you are going to tell me every cell service provider tracked every phone in the US to see if people were staying home under Covid 19 quarantine or not.

The data collected is not personalized. There is no identification attached to the data. How is Apple supposed to troubleshoot and improve Siri's responses without someone listening to the interchanges that take place? The analysts who do this kind of work are supposed to keep whatever they hear confidential and not go running to journalists with tales of what they are hearing. I hope the "whistleblower" never works again...anywhere. And this "journalist" too. He knows better, but he likes the clicks.

I know I'll sound like a grumpy old man, and I'm not even that old, but I've never liked things like Siri, Alexa, and "hey Google". I think they are solutions to nonexistent problems, technology for technology's sake, and of little practical value. I turn all of it off on my phone, and will not have Alexa or the like in my house.

@CLT65 You need to read my story about Alexa... :s0140:

I get what you're saying but that's not the issue.

The issue is that these devices bounce just about all communication up to the server for processing to see if you've said "hey Siri" recently and if it should pay attention. These recordings are not actual Siri requests but just background noise recorded while the system waits for a legit request.

For one, I understand the need to send audio out for stronger AI processing but shouldn't it be possible that the "Hey Siri" part be done locally with nothing sent up until activation of the feature is confirmed?

And two, if every audio does have to be sent up, why is it not deleted in damn near real time if no "Hey Siri" is found?

They're using the audio for more than just Siri. They just don't even tell the contractors what the data is really being used for.

I can hear the advertisement now:

Catch the latest summer blockbuster amateur porn movie release... Pegging Reno!

So, since I'm having sex by myself, does that mean they aren't listening to me? o_O

Siri doesn't have a response algorithm to, "fap fap fap"....

The data collected is not personalized.
For now...
At least, we think it isn't personalized right now.
Given the complete corruption of our overlords and their insatiable desire for total power, how long do you think it will be before the data is personalized?

China already has a "social credit score" scheme that their overlords use to "keep the peasants in line" through intimidation and restricted access to basic human needs/wants (travel, clubs, higher education/indoctrination, even stores!).

The UK is awash in CCTV cameras watching everyone's every move, outfitted with facial recognition capability. Why is that?

I don't see it being a far stretch for bubblegum like that to make its way here, if it hasn't already. And this spying by Big tech leads me to believe it's already here and has been for some time.

They're using the audio for more than just Siri. They just don't even tell the contractors what the data is really being used for.
And there it is, right there...

I have a Siri story from years ago, when Siri was new. A coworker came in with his new phone, and was showing off the cutting-edge Siri voice recognition on it. He says "Watch this", and asked his phone a random question, "What's the population of Moscow" or something along those lines.
Silence. So he asks again. Again silence, so he tries again, getting irritated.
The Siri computer voice then says, for everyone in the room to hear, "Would you like me to take my clothes off for you?"
He just stood there dumbfounded and embarrassed, "I-I-I ddon't know why it said that!"

Neither do I, but it sure was funny. :)

No different than Amazon. I won't have any Alexa like devices in my house ever. I put black tape over my computer cams since many are built with them in now.

Every time I hear this stuff all I get is a big yawn. How many phones are there in the US? Apple is not the only one doing this, they all do or can. So how many people would they need to hire to try to listen to even 1% of this traffic? If I was some kind of large scale criminal I may worry a little about it. What they hear from me, if they chose to listen? There is just too many people here for them to bother with. I think a lot of people who "think" someone is spying on them either can't really get their head around how many of us there are, or they think they are far more important than they really are. If they were listening to all this why is there any crime? They could be stopping it all before it happened. So instead of doing that they are listening in on my talking to the wife? I mean come on people. I guess if someone is really just sure they are being listened too they could buy or make a Faraday cage for the damn phone for when they did not want to use it? Suspect someone will be selling one if they have not already. Should be a good market for them with so many people just sure everyone cares what they are saying.
