Soil structure is as important maybe more so than organic matter. Organic matter makes up about 5% of a soil structure. Organic matter is under a constant state of decomposition, especially when you are adding soil bacteria like the Miracle Grow, which is a very good thing to do in addition to regular fertilizers.

Soil structures consist of sand slit and clay. You can look up the soil triangle and you will be able to see what the best soil structure is for growing crops. You can do a jar test of your current soil to determine your current soils structure or mineral make up is. You can then determine what mounts of a particular structure or soil type you need to add to get the best mixture for growing a wide range of crops.

Depending on where you are at, in Western Oregon we have very heavy silt clay soils in most areas, that can be greatly improved with sand to get that proper ratio of structure / mineral content. Addition of organic matter each year will help you out. Your soil structure will determine what your fertilizer ratios should be, you can get as crazy as you want, but adding a micro nutrient suite to your fertilizer mixes will hep a lot too.

Oregon State University has some of the best on line resources for crop growing and crop science. You follow those and then add in the soil bacteria and you will have more produce than you can use and some great quality.
