" A team member found a handgun inside a diaper bag..., at at a family retreat held at the Texas School for the Deaf, ... "
" The discovery did not trigger a lockdown and police were not contacted. ... "

"A staff member locate and return the firearm to its owner, who was allowed to leave without an escort ..."

"The owner of the diaper bag was identified, told to leave, and left the campus with family, ..."

(D) Keep it and take it to the gun show to flip anonymously. Nah, that isn't an option. Not in Wash. state, anyway.

In the 1960's, a school friend found a Walther Model 9 that somebody had thrown over his fence from a highway. He turned it in to the police, it was never claimed, after a time, they called him and said he could come pick it up, it was now his. I don't believe state laws there allow that option to the police anymore. They only return found or impounded guns to registered owners, and then only under certain conditions.

Why was a staff member going through other people's property?
Been a while since you had small kids? You take the kids and their bag to the nursery - the staff uses your clothes etc for your kid.

One of the reasons I am not a proponent of off-body carry.

Unless, of course, your kids are trained to field a crew-served weapon platform.

Gotcha. It hasn't been that long, but that makes sense I guess.

A hoodlum thought popped in my head and I thought, "Better not post that or they'll be kicking down your door!"

Back to the Addams Family!🙄

Lots of depends. If I had been the person to find it in a diaper bag I would have put it back in the bag and then returned it to the owner with a good finger waggle about security of said pow pow. If I was walking along a deer trail 5 miles from a road and found a hunting rifle (or a Winchester model 73) leaning up against a Juniper tree I would most likely after trying to find out its owner via the serial number. Should that not prove possible I would keep it.

I found a .45 Colt Darringer type pistol in the dumpster once, called the police who came and picked it up and took it! About 4 months later I got a call asking if I wanted to claim it, sure, off to the Station and filled out the 4473 and brought home my new Pistol! Neat-o snake charmer is about all I can think of using it for, .45 Colt is a waste with such short barrels, so I keep it loaded with .410 shot shells! Might make a great belly gun some day, though kinda heavy for what it is!

It's nice to see a little common sense prevail in a situation like that. Kudos to the head admin for showing some backbone and putting the kibosh on the ninny whiners.

The parent likely had their kid enrolled there over a period of time and known to the staff. The parent did a faux pas and forgot they dropped their carry in the diaper bag. No need to make a circus out of a one time unintentional mistake.

Having a kid still in diapers... you gotta know that parents brain is a little frazzled, likely a bit sleep deprived and being pulled in every which direction just managing their family life. The last thing they need is a bunch of Karens blowing up their lives with LE and legal issues over a brain fart.

was that the break that got you off the streets where you no longer need to search dumpsters?
