Man.
This guy really, really hate squirrels to go through all this. :(

Most ranchers and farmers do... but they generally just let people pay them to massacre the little cuties (er, beasts) on their property. The weird thing is that I was having a hard time following the logic of it all, even BEFORE they combined threads. I'll bet those new to the thread are really lost!!!

Since we are now on the topic of squirrels, have you seen any whistle pigs in your area? We had millions last year and now not a single one anywhere. Must be Covid...

I haven't been out, so IDK.

A few years back, maybe 6yrs, a friend wanted to go squeak shooting. There were plenty in my usual spot (another friends property but we couldn't go past the gate), but we drove all over for miles and didn't see more than one or two. I think what happens is it gets hot and dry out and they go back to staying in the burrow???

I've heard occasionally plague will run through a rodent population and wipe them out. Even our Red Tail and Swinson Hawks are living off birds, mice and snakes but no whistle pigs anywhere.

It is said by some that many police officers are not very firearms oriented and many so-called gun "accidents" occur in police departments.

Here is my account of meeting cops who don't seem too gun smart.

In late 2005, I was traveling with a buddy to Jackpot, NV to play the penny machines. My buddy was driving without his lights on at night (he had car battery problems) and got stopped by some local sheriff deputies. My buddy parked right in the parking lot of the casino we were visiting as the cops put the flashing lights on right as we were about to pull in anyway. We were asked some questions and one officer asked us if these were any firearms in the car. They were two male officers in their 30's. They seemed like rural types. Anyway, I told the one who asked that I had my unloaded revolver in the back of the car. He asked me, "What? Do you mean a semi-automatic pistol?" I said, "No, officer, a Smith & Wesson .38 Special" . He asked to see the gun so I showed it to him. It was in a case. He ran the serial number to see if it was hot and handed it back to me. Maybe I should have explained to the officer that I had a "Russian roulette gun" for his better understanding. Anyway, my buddy got let off with a warning about the headlights and that was that. Are revolvers in Nevada called "six-guns" instead of "revolvers"? The officers seemed like cowboy types. Both officers were rather young and had autos in their holsters. They may have never seen or touched a wheelgun.

I made this thread here because I believe firearms semantics has much to do with education and training. The various discussions of firearms is rife with language pollution by the military, law enforcement, the media and politicians. It's disturbing to know that men sworn and trusted with badges, handcuffs, high-speed pursuit cars and guns might not even know what a "revolver" is by that name.

Reminds me of.....

And note that in my day. The regular patrol guys didn't get "fancy equipment". So.....

Aloha, Mark

I've been poking around Google and yoo-tube a lot lately and some new idea has come to me: .17 HMR

In .17 HMR, there is this nice-looking cheap little puppy by Savage:

Now after seeing this video, 17 HMR has me "thinking outside the (CF cartridge) box".

About 30 cents a pop for .17 HMR, and with high-quality .22LR, at about 20 cents a dead rat. My research seems to indicate that this rimfire caliber is a tack-driver with great plinkuracy.

I'm looking for a great "rat rig" and I'm now starting to realize that centerfire cartridges might not make much sense, dollars and cents, for the squeaks. Sure it's fun so see a squirrel explode at 100 yards but I need to start having a lick of sense about the whole ratty thing.

Do any of the people here have a .17HMR rifle from anything from gophers in the truck garden to fox raiding the henhouse? Will a .17 HMR even go to town on a prairie dog town?

I guess Goat Farmer is only allowed a single thread at this site for the entire duration of his membership. Rats, rats and double RATS!! No more new thread attempts from me here. This is pure horse manure. If I were to try to start a thread about archery, boating or fishing would that get stuffed here too?

I can understand your frustration. But under forum rules, if you have a problem with mods, you take it to @Joe Link, not in a thread. I hope you have better luck starting separate threads as I like to read about rats, rifles, home defense shotties, etc.

BTW, Mr. GoatFarmer, I did suggest .17HMR to you earlier. Glad you are warming up to it.

A few people that I know have rifles in that cartridge selection and LOVE them. They are flat shooting, AND accurate, with higher energy than .22lr.

I think I've read about that little Savage before and it supposed to be a goodie!!!

(Edit to add: a 22Mag might make some sense too, since you mentioned getting a handgun earlier and companion guns are kinda nice to have, I think.)
