Anybody been doing this type of stuff shedding lately. I have some old socks I could part with.
This was brought up in another post fairly recently. No memory of what the original post was, but probably another one of yours... 😃

In any case, I do a maintenance purge about every 6 months and a deep clean purge annually. Despite my trying to be diligent in not bringing unnecessary things into my little corner of the world, it inevitably still happens.

I hate clutter and I don't hold onto to things that are not useful to me on regular basis. If I haven't used something or even thought about it in 6 months to a year it goes bye-bye. The only exception to this rule is things that may be passed down through generations. Might not get used regularly, but it does have a lot in life and so it gets to stay.

Ultimately this is a me thing, but I know it'll ease the burden for my family when I'm gone. That and the fact that what I do have, keep, and use is very well organized so I know that'll make things easier for them too.

I'm in the process of cleaning out, (Before selling), a 40' boat I have had for over 30 years.:(
It's like moving out of a house!
" A fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Las Vegas with all that stuff!"

I read something just the other day that I'd never heard before, but it fits me perfectly, I think.

"You're the child of a child of the Great Depression.'

And I am. I have stuff I haven't even looked at in years. If you couldn't afford to buy a new one, you made the old one work or went without, but you didn't throw stuff out that 'you might need someday.' Just the way it was.

We could be back there one of these days.

My parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents all lived through the Great Depression, and not only survived, but lived stable, happy lives. None of them were rich prior to the Depression, but all had skills and the motivation to work hard and be frugal. They also avoided debt, before and after. They all lived within their means, and made sure their children got good, but not expensive, educations.

My wife and I have continued the trend. We have instilled these values our children.

I am the opposite of a hoarder. I will sell or throw things away when I start feeling cramped by too many possessions. I'm not proud of it, but I've thrown many things away that had a monetary value. Nothing too valuable just smaller items of say less than $100 street price. My sanity is worth more to me than the cash.

I have a very good friend that is now having problems getting around. He is 87. He has no kids and through the last 25 years has become one of my most trusted friends. I look at him as a mentor. He is getting to the point that he actually has very little desire to even shoot. He has received several firearms from me over the years. We talk about hunting, shooting and such. In short I probably am going to be inheriting a couple of rifles. Watching him go through this process it dawned on me I will be going through the same process as I do not have kids either. I treasure certain firearms because of who owned them an in a weird little way I feel a connection to the previous owner. When I handle my father's Browning Bar I think of him. These guns have no price to me. Someday I may have to find homes for them. I will curse the person that neglects them. Growing old sucks and reminds me of the late great John Prines song called "Sovenirs "

^ Right there with you. I absolutely abhor clutter.

As to Swedish death ...

Some people like simplicity and structure such as a garden you don't dare walk through for fear of displacing a stone.

Others like more randomness and chaos in their garden and don't worry about a few weeds popping up here and there or some gravel getting kicked off to the side.

These two examples could have an equal fiat investment in them and be enjoyable to their owners.

Personally, I have a preference for randomness and chaos but I don't knock those who go the OC route or any path in between.

In anticipation of moving to Montana, we started downsizing LAST YEAR! We went from a bit over 3000 sq ft to 1600 sq ft, and I was dumping / donating stuff right up until the weekend before our move. Clearly, there is still work to be done.

I have thought about this very thing
And every time I start looking at selling or just throwing it out,( I think if I get rid of that now I could need it at some point and then I got to buy it again )

I share that thought process. My wife would be quick to point out that the hoarders also share that thought process.
