I would never rob and steel and kill to do it, I would kill in defense only. Steeling a car or bike, only if I really felt no other way was available and I would not car jack some one to do it.

I got to have standards, if I am willing to kill some one who is steeling from me, and using a weapon, then what should I expect if I am steeling from some one else? They would be justified in killing me.

If I am to die in a SHTF situation, I'd rather breath my last breath knowing I had the moral high ground and was not dying because I was a thief and was caught in the act by some one like me who was defending himself and his stash for his family.

I know desperate times can make you do desperate things, I just hope I never have to become what I hate in order to stay alive.

YEP I guess I didn't say that right I'm not going to kill someone for their car a motorcycle what I was trying to say is there will be people trying to take what little you have such as food or drink or something like that or if you're the one with the car or truck or motorcycle

I did not mean to imply you would just be murdering people, I was just saying what I'd do and figured if you wanted to clarify your point you would, as you did.

I think about that situation some times and wonder what it would be like and how to best handle it.

Like I think bout it alot what would I do and sad to say with what's going on out on the streets today it doesn't look good it's going to be a big f!@#$%& mess

I don't have family or pets around here, so getting home wouldn't be a giant concern (though I would still want too).

If the event occurred while I was at work, I'd likely head to rei or sportsman's and do some looting to make sure I'd be fine for a while. Mostly clothing that would keep me dry and warm on my trek home.

If I was at home, the first place I'd go is bimart for food, water, seeds, medicine, guns, ammo, and something I could setup for rain water collection. I'd have cash for this.

If I was far away from home, I guess I live here now. Time to gather supplies.

Am I confused, or are you?

If a widespread natural disaster occurs, the stores will either not have power and be closed, destroyed themselves, the staff would have left for there own homes etc..

It is EXTREMELY unlikely you will be able to buy anything.

As far as buying a firearm, that'd be a no-go as well. Any widespread natural disaster would cut power/internet. The store will not be able to run your background check. They will not sell you a firearm. The staff will have secured the firearms (or taken themselves for secure storage at home) closed up and gone home.

Taking anything which is not yours is stealing.

You actually plan on looting? That is an incredibly good way to get yourself dead.

It would be much simpler to buy 10 or 20 lbs of oatmeal, and a few cases of bottled water. Today. You'd have plenty of oatmeal to eat for one person for over a month.

There will be plenty of work to do, for folks who want to work.

Aaah he's going to get on the world wide web and post a snapchat pic and hope one of his friends comes to help him they all together might have 3 cans of campelels soup so they good for a day

Chances.

Depends on where you are and how much time you spend there.

I am on a road 2 hours per workday, commuting to work. Half of that time is on rural roads, half on highways that would become a parking lot - hell they do that half the time today - it would just be a permanent parking lot. I hope I don't get caught on the east side of the zoo on 26 as there will be huge landslides especially in the winter.

Eight hours per day I am in my office in a building built about 1920 - I have mixed feelings about that as it has brick exterior walls, but the interior has stout concrete pillars every 15 feet because it used to be a huge 9 story warehouse. I work on the second floor - I don't know if that is good because I can get out quickly or bad because the building might pancake.

I do know if I am at work I won't be driving home from the office as it would mean crossing the west hills in PDX.

The rest of the time I am at home - my BOL. If I retire (3-4 years) before the quake hits I will be spending 99% of my time at home or completely out of the area (e.g., south pacific).

Once I retire, I intend to sell my current property, move further out, build an earth bermed shop - with small living quarters - with reinforced concrete specifically designed to be resistant to severe earthquakes.

I am less worried about my chances than I am about my kids who live on the edge of the growth boundary in WA county, who may need to evacuate and come to my place.

Speaking of the zoo.

Have you thought about the fact that some zoo animals, and other wild animals in private possession, and more conventional pets - especially dogs - and some farm animals (especially pigs) will get loose from their confinement?

There are people who have wolves, lions/tigers/etc. and other wild animals, in various reservations, etc.

Personally, I think the biggest threat in that respect will be all the pet dogs that will become feral, but I will keep in mind that there will be other animals that I have not encountered in the wild, ranging from hippos (very dangerous) to elephants and monkeys/chimps/etc.

So minus the underwhelming revelation from the OP, this has been a fantastic thread to read. Thanks to everyone that provided constructive advice. The HAM radio and water proof bags definitely have me re-thinking my entire "get back home" set up.

I'll go back to lurking now.

I already do the Duel Sport thing when ever the weather is good, my bike gets about 55 miles per gallon and has an oversize 4.8 gallon tank! I have extra fuel, and soft saddle bags plus a rack system on the tail, so I can carry enough for One person to get home! Wife hasn't decided on a bike yet, but she will probably have one this spring! My bike is nice and light ( Converted Enduro Bike, 243 pounds dry) and I can actually lift it over things if I had to, and I stripped the gear off it.

I agree could be a life saver. You can go where vehicles cant make it . And great for getting game or water, berries and such. All my other motorcycles are gone but not the dual sport. :)

I didnt think about the zoo.... I think they would all die off quickly because they dont know how to live in the wild. The dangerous ones would probably take out a person or two, but get shot soon enough.

All the feral dogs and cats will become free food.... Yuk.

COL. Otto Skorzeny tells of going tiger hunting when he was invading France.

Seems he was in his command car checking on some maps , when a French baker ran by ... screaming about a tiger in his shop.
After stopping the baker and getting directions to the shop ... Skorzeny found the tiger amid the pastries ... A well place .8mm round and Skorzeny had the makings of tiger rug!:D
Apparently the tiger had escaped from the zoo....

For the ones here .. I usually dice 'em up and serve 'em over potatoes and gravy or rice and gravy ... Or a nice lemon garlic sauce / white wine sauce ... well seasoned with garlic , peppers , onions and mushrooms ... YUM! :D
