Not quite. You do not need a <broken link removed> for ANY intrastate transport of any NFA item. For any NFA item other then Silencer and AOW you have to fill out a 5320-20 for interstate transport. If you are moving intrastate with any NFA item or interstate with Silencer or AOW the ATF requests you to submit a 5320-20.Nwcid is right: There is no legal requirement to notify the ATF on suppressors. All other class 3 things do however.
Be VERRY careful driving through California, as it seems that suppressors are illegal there. You can ship it to yourself I believe, or you can fly with it the same way you would with firearms. Don't drive through Cali on the way though.

Silencers are only legal for "agencies" in CA. Yes it is best to avoid states where you items are not allow. In theory the 1986 FOPA should protect you but I would not bet on it 100% if it can be avoided.

Nope, said it correctly. You do NOT need an 5320.20 for intrastate (in state) transport of any NFA item.
