::Ahem:: I believe you mean, "Large Capacity." twas 1994.

The Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Act, a subsection in the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act defined "Large Capacity" magazines.

Serious question though.. 50rd drum mag for the P320 xcarry.... buy so it will be grandfathered in?
Why? Stick mags like the 33 rd Glock mag make somewhat reasonable sense because they are still "wieldable." If it is going to be put in a carbine it would make sense, but pistol drum mags in pistols seem as far as practical usability goes, ridiculous.

Then again, your money, use it how you want.

Some time around 1993 or 1994, I believe.
Indeed. It is a bullplop political term that in no way comports with reality.

Brought to you by the same group of the political aisle that attempt to ban guns as much as they can at every chance they get.

Worse yet, the people who say "I support the second amendment." - but then vote for those people.
True that one party is much more vocal about their support for that kind of legislation these days, but so-called "assault weapons bans" have often enjoyed bipartisan support over the years.

Early example of said:

"We are writing to urge your support for a ban on the domestic manufacture of military-style assault weapons. This is a matter of vital importance to the public safety. Although assualt (sic) weapons account for less than 1% of the guns in circulation, they account for nearly 10% of the guns traced to crime.
...
The 1989 import ban [created by George H.W. Bush (R)] resulted in an impressive 40% drop in imported assault weapons traced to crime between 1989 and 1991, but the killing continues.
...
While we recognize that assault weapon legislation will not stop all assault weapon crime, statistics prove that we can dry up the supply of these guns, making them less accessible to criminals. We urge you to listen to the American public and to the law enforcement community and support a ban on the further manufacture of these weapons." — Open letter dated May 3, 1994, signed by former presidents Gerald Ford (R), Jimmy Carter (D), and Ronald Reagan (R)
And more recently:

  • 2008, the Republican candidate for president, John McCain, had previously voted against the 1994 ban, but supported, and voted for, renewal as it was nearing sunset in 2004. (March 3, 2004)
  • 2012, the GOP candidate for president, Mitt Romney, had previously signed into law a state-level AWB, stating, quote, "Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts. These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people." (July 1, 2004)
  • 2016, the RNC candidate was one Donald J. Trump who after winning the election, in 2018, supported adding Diane Feinstein's (D) updated AWB to a comprehensive Federal firearms bill stating, quote, "So if you can add that to this bill, that would be great. Dianne, if you could add what you have also and I think you can into the bill ..." (February 28, 2018)

Republicans aren't perfect but the other side is NUTS. When republicans can't explain the difference between a man and a woman then I'll apply that label to them both equally.

Why is calling a magazine that holds a lot of rounds "high capacity" so alarming to gun people? Why not get upset about high top athletic shoes? They aren't really all that high.

Big rigs should be normal rigs.
Large caliber should be normal caliber.
Tactical weapons are normal weapons.

"A lot" is relative. It's alarming because it is designed to make it seem "unreasonable" as in excessive.

It's also alarming because the government is ok with themselves having it, but not the citizens. The exact opposite of the intention of our founders.

No one is trying to ban high top shoes. This is getting stupid.

Well, if reminding people that "hi cap" isn't PC doesn't work, you could always try to repeal the First Amendment. :D
