I carry an assisted most of the time.

Hand on my knife during evenings and such when people are walking my way.

Knife is open by the time I pull my hand out of my pocket and ready to use.

Since your in Portland I would look at one of the Benchmade auto's - they arejust as fast and all you need to do is push a button.

Something that was drilled into me a long time ago is that no one walks away from a knife fight...

So if you pull a knife in self defense - use it in a hurry.

My ex-wife was texting me. I guess I can blame this on her. She was updating me on the condition of our son who is battling a serious illness.

1) Common theme here is you missed on your situational awareness.
2) Blaming others (your ex-wife) removes the responsibility/ability to change/fix something yourself.
3) Hopefully your Son makes a full recovery.

Thanks for the location info. I have been to the Off Ramp several times.:p Neighborhood
around that hotel always had some sketchy characters hanging around. I think a lot
is the scum begging at the I205/Mill Plain exit nearby. Glad you are OK.
In hind sight you always think of should of, could of, would of...............:rolleyes: We ALL
do stuff we regret later most of the time it doesn't go bad. Thanks for letting
us all be more aware of our soundings and rethink personal safety.:D:D:D

Isn't there a blade length limit? From what I remember reading it is 3 inches.

I'm glad you're okay. Learn from this encounter and refuse to be a victim.

When I am in an out of town area that I'm not familiar with it is my soul purpose to keep my head on a swivel and if I'm walking I double that and have my gun or knife at the ready.
I never have my phone out when I'm walking anywhere.

I too have been a victim of a knock out punch from behind in my teens that taught me situational awareness is everything. Those who do not learn from mistakes are destin to always fall victim to thugs.

(Corrected under authority of PCC Section 1.01.035 on June 2, 2017.) No person shall possess in any Park any thing specifically designed for and presently capable of causing, or carried with the intent to threaten or cause, bodily harm to another. Things prohibited under this Section include, but are not limited to: any firearm, pellet gun, spring-loaded weapon, stun gun or taser, any knife having a blade that projects or swings into position by force of a spring or by centrifugal force, any knife with a blade longer than 3-½ inches, any dirk, dagger, ice-pick, sling shot, slungshot, metal knuckles, nunchaku, studded handcoverings, swords, straight razors, tear gas containers, saps, sap gloves, hatchets or axes. The prohibitions of this Section do not apply to handguns lawfully carried by persons exempt from local regulation under ORS 166.173. The prohibitions of this Section do not apply to any thing possessed or used to carry out actions authorized by any contract or permit in any Park.

OH NO. The old DIRK, DAGGER, ICE PICK RULE!!!!

Musta come from years ago when there was an ice factory in the hood. One guy stabbed another with an ICE PICK, and there wasn't a law against it! A knife? YES! And I knew a guy named Dirk some years ago, he worked with my wife. He was cool guy, but I never carried him, in a park or otherwise. o_O

If it's clipped to your pocket then it is not concealed that I know of. The clip is still showing. Everyone I know keeps a 3.25+ knife

Where can I pick up a high quality knife? I checked the sportsman's warehouse and everything is sold out in the local stores.

I like the Benchmade cuz they are local down off boonsferry I believe.

I know the infidel is popular if you can afford it but they have many in half that price range.

Keeping your head on a swivel is good advice, with this point added: Constantly look 'behind you'.

Yes, you look kinda odd doing that...so what?

Better too look odd than be assaulted.

Plus, do your phone business when in private. Doing phone business when in public advertises you're available to be a victim...

You can tool up all you want but if you lack the attitude and the all important situational awareness, it will be for naught.

As far as knife fights go....how do you tell the winner of one?

The one with LESS holes in them.;)

My 2 cents worth. not trying to be condescending, only helpful.

Go and find yourself a nice edc knife for a wide range of applications, (boxes, work, home repair stuff, etc) 3.25in in blade length that you can clip on your pocket for ease of use. As stated above, no one wins in a knife fight, but having one is better than just fists vs a knife.

I'm sorry to hear about your boy, I hope he gets well soon. My daughter was sick and in and out of the hospital for a few years, shes better now, but what our kids need most is us to make sure we make it back to them at the end of the day, parental love is a strong medicine.

I read: "Having a gun on your person doesn't turn on a magical bubble that surrounds you, protecting you from harm."

Agree, but not entirely certain how to consider this statement...?

Don't carry (as you're most likely a weak person whose naive enough to believe a gun does provide a bubble of self defense) and hope for the best or simply always be ready for actual self defense i.e., don't bluff with a gun you're supposedly going to use for self protection?

I'd like to add, if a disparity of force (in this case more than one assaulting person) who you've no clue as to what harm they may do you beyond mugging (like end up killing you) while you stand there armed when confronted means 1. Don't carry a gun if you can't defend yourself with it as you're actually a bluffer or 2. Be ready to do what's needed to keep from potentially being murdered by robbers who very well may also be killers?

Is 2. what you mean?

the tribal police don't seem to be too worried about it.

I was staying at the trailer park across from the Hon-Dah casino near Pinetop AZ. Danged tribal guards stole my gas cans out from under the 5th wheel. Caught them eyeballing the cans while they patrolled around. White Mtn Apache tribe... we (workers) were told not to be out by ourselves because tribal members would always say how much they hated white men.

Drawing a gun would have probably scared the attackers away.

Again, maybe... this doesn't always work. I assume you mean after they punched you, knocking you to the ground... you really think they would have let you draw on them while you were reclined?

I was actually looking down checking messages on my phone. All of sudden the 2 guys were there. A split second later I was hit and fell to the ground.

My ex-wife was texting me. I guess I can blame this on her. She was updating me on the condition of our son who is battling a serious illness.

Yah, don't do that until you get back to your room. There is NOTHING that can't wait 5 minutes.

Their are plenty of people (hardened criminals) who will laugh in your face and make you eat a gun if you pull it and they can tell you are not willing to use it.

My local IDPA did a drill 2 yrs ago with a new scenario that was generated because bangers have gotten used to being shot at. The drill had us take fast and aggressive action with overwhelming force and lots of boisterous yelling to catch them off guard (cuz white men don't behave that way). Individually we ran at the targets while firing our hi-cap mags and yelling at the top of our lungs. I screamed "Happy Birthday M/Fr." and "You want some of this?" while I shot targets at point blank range. It was a good time.

But once you are on the ground, it's too late!!

OP - I don't know about here and now, but when I lived in S Cal and worked around E L.A. in the 70s the Hispanics specialized in knife fighting. One of my brother's friends got stabbed in the back (edit: fatally) while in line at a taco stand. Talk about not knowing what was coming. Yikes! Never caught me in line at a taco stand after that. But in Paramount CA a guy did try to run me over and then jumped out yelling and screaming... glad I was only a few steps away from the Telco door... was just coming back from walking to lunch in Torrance. Large gangs used to block the street and try to stop my car. I quit that job.

My other brother had a friend that was facing an armed robber in a store parking lot in Las Vegas. The robber was armed with a fixed blade knife. The friend was a built athletic guy so he grabbed the knife arm and fought back. The fight went to the ground and the robber fell on his own knife, killing the robber. Robber's family sued the friend for big $$ and the friend went broke defending himself in court. Beware, the laws of using deadly force extend to knife use also. In OP's incident because of the initial attack and the force disparity, I think it would turn out ok in court but... it's better not to be in that situation in the first place, yes?

We've beaten the horse, OP was jumped due to Iphone-itis. Head buried in a phone in public. Mistake. If you must check something, find a safe location to do so. Not on a street corner, dark parking ramp, alleyway, etc.
A gun here would have done nothing and you'd have been relieved of your gun, since they got the drop on you due to lack of situational awareness.

Last month a acquaintance of mine who does long-haul driving stopped at a rest stop. Next memory was waking up with a concussion and no wallet. He was apparently ambushed from behind and hit in the head with an object and robbed.

Let's take situational awareness to the next level.

Spiders cast webs and predators hunt areas for prey. When you are in the general public, ASSUME the people around you want your stuff and are willing to hurt you for it. ASSUME there is a dangerous person hiding in the bathroom stall, or the bushes, or the alley behind the trash dumpster, etc. Act accordingly. Don't flash valuables, don't stand out, don't look like a rich/easy target. Look at every person - in the eye preferably. Pay attention to others and you will see how few people are aware of their surroundings.
