My wife and I saw a movie at the Sherwood Regal Cinema earlier tonight. We would have preferred a different theater but it was the only one that showed the movie we wanted to see at a convenient time.

We bought our tickets at the booth, and the 17 yr old girl sitting behind the glass tells my wife that she needs to open her purse. So my wife complied, and the girl (from behind the glass) gave a cursory glance inside, without asking my wife to remove or rearrange anything or open it wide enough to see all the way into the bottom.

My wife spoke up in a firm but polite voice and asked why it was that SHE was being searched but that none of the MEN were being subjected to similar scrutiny. The response? "Well ma'am, if a man brought a purse in we would ask him to open it also." Wow.

Women carry purses. Men don't. Leaving aside the fact that glancing into a purse from inside a ticket booth is a joke that serves no purpose from a safety standpoint ( since I was standing right behind her the entire time carrying a concealed Glock 26) their policy is flat out discriminatory against women.

How can people be so stupid as to think that this will do anything to prevent mass shootings? And how can Regal get away with such blatant sexism?

The real reason is they are checking for Goobers, Snickers bars, popcorn, bottles of wine, and any other comestable. Must keep up those profits since they don't make money on the show.

Yep, I think you've got it right there - just protecting their profits at the concession stand.

Besides, there must be better ways to protect all their patrons from the hordes of purse-toting bad girls that have been shooting up our theaters :confused::confused:o_O

I'd love to see someone come in with a weapon clearly visible in the open purse. I wonder what they'd do? Call the cops? Alert their squad of pimply-faced 16-year old ticket takers to pile on and take her down?

I probably wouldn't make a huge deal about it, otherwise, they will concede it's sexist and then hire security staff to do a full pat-down on everyone.

Regal Corporate probably got the latest copy of the "TSA Guide for Stopping Terrorists".....

They are just limiting liability for future lawsuits. They know it does nothing for security but that is the game corporate America is playing these days.

Buy a quality big screen tv and a kick azz audio surround sound for it.
Wait for the movie to come out on blue ray.

They're just trying to protect the bottom line. Nothing more!
This action does 2 things for them:
-keep people from sneaking in snacks
-prevent a huge lawsuit if another shooting occurs

how is that response discriminatory?

The questions I posed in my original post were rhetorical.

The way to confront Regal about this stupidity isn't by debating the gun issue. Instead, it needs to be confronted from the standpoint of its inherent sexism. This puts the Moms and the Libs in the uncomfortable position of being forced to endorse male chauvinism, which will then open up the debate to include criticism of the policy's inherent stupidity and its absolute uselessness as a security measure.

If Regal decides to beef things up with metal detectors and frisking of patrons, this will create enough delays and hassles for patrons that they will vote with their feet and go elsewhere. Regal knows this, which is why their "security" consists of nothing more than the empty gesture of peeking into women's purses.

Regal isn't actually doing anything that will make their theaters any safer. The only thing that is worse than doing nothing....is doing nothing while pretending that you are doing something.

Because none of the men that were in line for tickets were searched or asked to display their personal belongings. Only the women were.
no, you said the response from the theater employee/representative was that men with purses would be searched also, so thats not discriminatory. Their actual policy is to search ALL bags and mentions nothing about gender or other types of searches, the fact that most men don't carry handbags or purses has nothing to do with it.

F regal. When i was 21 i worked a private security job. My first assignment was for Regal. We had clear post orders which I followed. Number one mandate from Regal - our properties are not motels anyone caught engaging in sexual activity was to be booted from the property and given trespass notice. This was a regular thing - probably three or four times a week I would boot excited lovers.

One night I caught a 19 year old college student boning his 16 year old girlfriend. 19 year old got mouthy and spouted off about his civil rights he was in law school his dad was so and so of such and such law firm and he wanted to complain to the manager. I escorted his punk bubblegum in figuring the manager would back up theur stance and boot this jackass pedo.

Instead she apologized and gave him free tickets. When he left I told her to piss off called my boss and quit. I told him it was pointless for me to be there and if I wasnt getting support for doing my job f'em. He undrstood my sentiment. Instead of accepting me quitting he reassigned me. Two weeks later the theater called and asked specifically if I would come back as I had been the only one actually doing what they paid for instead of sitting in my car all night wanking or reading a book. I declined.

It was all for show - we were there to 'deter' auto break ins and boot humpers. Plenty of that despite our slightly above minimum wage presence. We didnt man the door we didn't check bags we didn't do anything to deter real crime. We did have to check each theater for stowaways though - gotta protect profits from theater hoppers.

Regal blows anyway - century cinemas had better concessions better seats better sound systems and were generally cleaner.

Last time we went to a movie I carried right passed the stupid sign of a hybrid glock/beretta with the circle slash. My m&p isnt a bastard baby from a drunken night of austro-italian love making so I was good right? No one asked to see inside my wifes bag no one molested us and the kids at the counter barely cared we were there. $24 for a bucket of popcorn, 2 drinks and a box of starburst... o_O it wasn't a regal either.

If theaters keep doing this nonsense its more reason to wait till its on netflix or hulu.
