They don't care it's stupid. The point is that it will make us jump through hoops like their dancing monkeys. People need to get fired up and pizzed about this.

If all you can do is pass out brochures, then pass out brochures. You can even do it standing on a street corner. How many will be standing outside Sportsman's and passing out brochures this weekend? Don't have plans, print off 30 or so brochures and get to it. If you can chip in a ream of paper to those of us printing brochures on our own, then do it.

Print out some of the brochures, circle the links on the back and give them to friends and neighbors that you know are pro 2A. Take some to the gun club and bring up what's in this. Let people know that they will no longer be able to carry a gun with a magazine that holds more than ten rounds. Doesn't matter if they have a CHL or not.

When you go into a gun shop to talk to them about leaving a stack of brochures in the counter, ask them if they have heard of Ballot Measure 114. You'll be shocked at how many don't have a clue, even though gun sales will be stopped for the foreseeable future when this goes through.

Get your hair on fire, get your fangs out! This is an all hands on deck casualty response!
I have several hundred one sheet two sided handouts. Can make more. People can put them on windshields at Cabelas, Sportsman Warehouse, Bass Pro and similar sporting places. We do while weather is still clear. Customers are natural allies. I have also taken a few hundred into some local gun shops. They were all happy to see me. Drop me a private message with your email. I can meet you with some handouts. You can go a few times per weekend to a sporting goods parking lot and have new windshields each time. Any chance anyone going to southern or eastern Oregon ? Natural allies there too

This is most recent version of a handout in text-only form so I can post it.

Vote NO on Anti-Gun Measure 114
Extreme impact on you, no impact on crime
Don't vote away your ability to defend yourself and your family

The permitting scheme is similar to Illinois' Firearm Owners' ID law, but worse.

Measure 114 makes you apply for a permit to buy any firearm. It can take a month or more. You must apply at the police station. Oregon already has universal background checks now. The new law would require:
* Fingerprinting and background check; Up to a 30-day wait.
* Completion of a "law enforcement certified" training course with a written and physical test.
* The application fee is set at $65. There is no limit on the price of the required class, and those classes don't exist yet. Law enforcement officials estimate $40 Million to provide classes, but the law comes with no budget. It could be years before classes (and permits) are available at any price.
* They make you do another background check again for each gun purchase.
* Gun registration scheme: The state keeps a permanent registry of the guns you own from your permit. When Measure 114 fails to reduce crime, the state can use this registry to enact gun taxes, more restrictions and confiscation.
* You can be locked out of a gun purchase forever. 114 will not allow a dealer discretion to release a firearm to you if the delay exceeds 30 days. No accounting for "same name" errors by the checkers.

Bans standard-sized magazines by calling them "high capacity" magazines
* Most modern handgun magazines are 12-17 rounds. They are banned by 114.
* Modern shotguns that can accept more than 10 "mini-rounds" will be banned.
* Grandfathering existing magazines only means you can have them on your property, at the range, hunting or locked in a separate case transporting them, even if you have a carry permit.

Isn't this just "common sense" gun control?
* It is not common sense to defund police, reduce sentences for violent crimes, let offenders back out with no bail, then punish law-abiding gun owners with more restrictions that criminals always ignore. This limits your self-defense options while criminals do what they want with few consequences.
* It is not common sense to do more of what doesn't work. Chicago has similar laws. Chicago's murder rate is higher than Columbia and Mexico1.

Who is most hurt by 114? The people the "blame guns" groups claim to care about.
* Poor and BIPOC residents of high-crime areas who can't afford to move. Residents surrounded by gangs and addicts. Measure 114 will make poor residents' lives harder, not safer. They can't rely on police to arrive in time to protect them. There are no limits to the costs to the poor and delays imposed by 114.
* In the last century every race, religion, nationality, gender, and identity group have been blamed for things done by people they never met to other people they never met. Harassment and violence are committed against victims who can't fight back, but rarely against people who can fight back.
* Violent offenders are back on the street before the police reports are done. Police can arrive to write a report, but not in time to stop violence. Poor residents are on their own until police arrive.
Supporters claim it will reduce accidental gun deaths
* More lives are lost from lack of self-defense than are lost from accidental discharges. In 2018 there were 458 fatal gun accidents2 and 16,000 homicides.
* Drug overdose deaths exceed 100,000 annually. The same extremists who promoted decriminalizing hard drugs (2020 Measure 110) say Measure 114 is for "safety".

Supporters claim extreme Measure 114 will reduce "gun violence", but it won't affect criminals
* Oregon already has universal background checks. 114 repeats the same check plus a longer wait.
* Most violent crime is committed by repeat offenders, already known to police, who already have guns and can't pass a background check3. Measure 114 makes problems for you, not criminals.
* The 1994 magazine bans and so-called "assault rifle" bans had such low impact on crime that Congress did not bother to renew it in 2004. Violent crime continued to fall nationwide until 2014.4

Supporters claim it will reduce suicides
* Oregon has decriminalized drugs. They are cheap and easy to get. Ropes and knives are even easier.
* The only people with guns in Japan are police and Yakuza gangsters. Japan suicide rates are similar to the US.

Do laws like this work?
* No. Most violent crime is committed by repeat offenders. They ignore robbery and murder laws now. Gun laws ban them from having guns yet they have guns. More laws make your life harder, not theirs.
* If these kinds of laws really worked, Baltimore would be the safest place in the US. Baltimore has laws similar to 114 yet their murder rates exceed El Salvador and Venezuela5 6.
* Magazine restrictions do not impact crime. Ask any police you know. Those laws only impact you.
* It is politically risky to take repeat offenders off the streets or address the real causes of crime. It is easier for politicians to look like they are "doing something about crime" with more useless gun laws.
* You may not think about owning a gun now. But an encampment by your home or an ex who becomes violent will change that. Do you really want to vote away your own ability to protect yourself? What about your children in 10 years? When seconds count, police are 5-20 minutes away. You are all you have.

What can I do about it?
* Few voters know about 114. If they see emotional words about "gun safety" they will vote yes unless you warn them. The voter pamphlet description was written by committee of majority 114 supporters.
* You don't have to believe us and please don't believe deceptive TV ads. Do your own research.
* Copy and distribute this flyer. Put on cars in parking lots. Write letters to editors and TV stations. Social media posts. Get publicity. It really is up to you. Tell everyone you can to vote NO. Learn more here:

Thanks for the reformat. It prints out better in all black.

BTW, self service copies are 20 cents each for double sided at Office Depot. If you have them do it, it's 36 cents per double sided copy on 20# paper..

Hi there. Greetings from across No Man's Land.

Along with Kevin Starrett, I was the driving force (from the Democratic side) in overcoming the nearly successful attempt by the Democratic legislative caucus, acting en bloc, to spike the one opportunity for the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission to weigh in on the equitable propriety of Measure 114.

You will see the happily FUD-inducing result in the voter's pamphlet, opposite Liz McKanna from LEVO's unhelpful and misleading "explanatory statement."

I wrote pp. 53-57 of this commentary to the Commission; take whatever material you want and run with it: https://sos.oregon.gov/elections/Documents/comments/Racial-and-Ethnic-Impact-Statement-Comments.pdf . It is worth your time to see why the other side has suddenly found itself enveloped in a mutiny over gun control.

The key to winning this, for all Oregonians, is to remind enough Democrats that no matter how in love with gun prohibitionism they may be, Measure 114 presents irreconcilable conflicts with our basic principles, and can thus be rejected on that basis alone. No one has to turn in their Democrat card for saying no to this one.

In fact, it may hearten you to know what happened when LEVO asked the Democratic Party of Oregon's State Central Committee (SCC) to endorse Measure 114 at the SCC's quarterly meeting last month in Eugene. We voted (if memory serves) 66-44 against endorsing LEVO's ballot measure, following one of the liveliest endorsement-time debates I've seen in my three terms of service.

The Multnomah County Democratic Central Committee also refused to extend its endorsement the week before the SCC met.

This is an excellent opportunity to find common ground. We are finally having the intra-party debate we should have had forty years ago, had Sens. Kennedy and Moynihan not stifled it in its crib: https://archive.org/details/restrictinghandg00kate
I am guessing that you can connect with people who might otherwise not give a pro 2A person much time. Would you like some flyers to use with folks to facilitate some conversations? You can message me and I will get you some

I'm looking for volunteers to help out at the No on 114 table at the gun show in Albany the 24th and 25th. Can anyone here help out?

Also, anyone have a schedule for gun shows n Oregon through October?

Are you in Southern Oregon? If I send you a PDF of the handout can you print and distribute around there? Gun stores, Cabelas park lot windshields etc?
I was in J&B Firearms the other day and they had an old weathered IP 17 flyer taped to their door. If you send the PDF maybe I can give them a new one since it's now up for vote in two months.

Updates from the enemy:

Dear Amleth,

Again we thank you for your generous support and dedication to the passage of Measure 114 on Election Day, November 8. And special thanks to 100+ friends for your recent donations to support LEVO's Campaign in Oregon.

We have some special news to share. Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon is honoring our three Lift Every Voice Oregon chief petitioners of IP 17 (now Measure 114): Rabbi Michael Cahana, Marilyn Keller and Rev. Dr. Mark Knutson; at the EMO annual dinner September 20! These three faith leaders are honored to accept this award on behalf of our 1600 LEVO volunteers and our community partners. You worked together, tirelessly, to collect 161,545 voter signatures to qualify gun safety Measure 114 for the Oregon ballot.

There is no better time than now to honor these outstanding leaders and the 1600 LEVO volunteers. Please make a donation today to support our shared vision to bring gun safety measures to our communities.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in his famous sermon against war and violence, said, "We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now!" Our LEVO leaders and volunteers clearly demonstrate King's message.

The election is in 61 days and we need your support TODAY to get facts and accurate information out to all Oregonians about what Measure 114 will do to save lives in Oregon. Please give what you can right now and encourage your friends, family and coworkers to join us.

The horrific gun violence in our communities that we saw recently in Bend, Salem, and Portland strengthens our commitment to end the violence. The increase in gun violence, 464 mass shootings in 2022, (up 58 shootings since August), has resulted in scores of lives lost, adults and children, in Buffalo, Uvalde, Highland Park, Chicago and so many more cities. The violence impacts Oregon: 164 homicides in 2021 and a projection of over 200 for 2022. We Oregonians can pass sensible and meaningful gun safety measures to address this epidemic.

Oregon Ballot Measure 114 will be voted on Tuesday, November 8, 2022.

Voter registration is critical for victory. Encourage everyone you know to make sure they are registered to vote here: vote.gov/register/or - the deadline to register is October 18.

What does passage of Measure 114 do?

  • Require a permit to purchase all firearms
  • Require completion of training covering safe storage, gun handling, and the law
  • Require passing a background check before a firearm sale can be completed
  • Maintain an improved database to track lost and stolen guns and expedite background checks
  • Ban future sales of large-capacity magazines over 10 rounds.
These common sense laws will save Oregon lives
beginning in January 2023.
Oregon Ballot Measure 114 is the result of the initiative process. In 2018 Oregon youth, faith-based leaders and others who value public health and safety came together to create the Lift Every Voice Oregon (LEVO) campaign after the Parkland, Florida school shootings. This volunteer group, joined by community partners, has worked tirelessly to bring sensible gun safety laws to Oregon.

LEVO has more than 1600 volunteers statewide who collected 161,545 signatures to qualify Measure 114 for the ballot. Many states are watching our progress closely and creating initiatives based on our Oregon model. You will make a difference by voting YES on Measure 114 on November 8.

Won't it suck if this passes and we can't buy firearms without having to do a background check anymore??

The idiocy and ignorance of these people should be criminal…
We have universal background checks already. This adds one to get a permit to buy, and a long wait for the same check. Then when you exercise that permit, you pay for another check. And of course they make a database of ownership. Then if you are seen as a member of the wrong political party, a governor can deem you a threat and they come confiscate.

It's actually very tricky language to ensure it passes.

  • Require passing a background check before a firearm sale can be completed (we already have this. It was included to make uninformed voters think it doesn't and this is a good initiative)
  • Maintain an improved database to track lost and stolen guns and expedite background checks (improved, as if one already exists and this law will add enhancements).
I could go on a serious tirade about this, but I'd just be preaching to the choir. It just goes to show that in American politics those with the most financial backing win.
