this due to basic concept of Russian MBT, using an auto loader to reduce the crew size
also with separate charge and shell, their turrets could be lower
but this alows for no case ejection, since they don't use one
the Polish recognized this fault and attempted to design an upgrade, but found this impractical, so they purchased M1 Abrams
yes, its a recognized shortcoming, but the basic design prohibits upgrade to a safer system
the Russians did correct this in the new T14, but even the T90 still used the 2 piece ammo system

this is the present assessment from the Institute for the Study of War

as we predicted, the Russian advance is restricted to the roads due to Ukrainian spring mud

"These forces are unlikely to enable Russian forces to break the current deadlock, as Russian attacks remain confined to two major highways (toward Slovyansk and Barvinkove) and cannot leverage greater numbers. Several successful Ukrainian counterattacks out of Kharkiv city in the last 72 hours have additionally recaptured a ring of suburbs north and east of the city and may additionally force Russian forces to redeploy units intended for the Izyum axis to hold these positions. "

THIS is worth watching, trust me. The guy is a hoot - telling us about all the advantages that russian tanks have over Ukrainian equivalent, and they STILL bail out and leg it when faced with even minimal opposition....

MLRS - your hour has come!!! 144 rounds of precision-guided munitions with a CEP of 5m heading your way with 8640 HEAT bomblets in EACH salvo.

In GW1 the Iraqi Republican Guard had an artillery brigade wiped out in less than ten minutes....

Ukraine has received German manufactured PzH 2000 motorized 155 mm howitzers
these units are impressive - they can fire 3 rnds in 9 secs in MRSI mode - that is all shots from this one gun land on target at the same time
then they can scoot out before Russian anti battery radar can identify their location

this is a reference article on the PzH 2000

you may have read Russia lost another General when the Ukrainians targeted a Russian command center near Izyum with a MRLS attack

I love the quote from the reporter
"it's hot - it's still smoking"
another victim of the Javelin system

according to specs, the T90M has the new main gun and fire system with one piece ammo like the T14
I guess that accounts for the turret still being on after being hit by a Javelin

T90M
"The tank, which features an advanced 125mm gun in a modernized turret, is encased with advanced armor protection and countermeasures systems.
The explosive-reactive armor is designed to protect against shaped charges and minimizes the impact of armor-piercing munitions, according to The Drive.
Only about 100 of the tanks are estimated to be in service."

"Experts have noted that older Russian tanks — including the T-72 and T-80 now in use in the invasion of Ukraine — are plagued by a "jack-in-the-box" design flaw that puts them at risk of losing their tops in an attack due to the storage of ammunition directly below their turrets.
Western militaries have been aware of the defect for decades. And photos have emerged from battlefields in Ukraine showing destroyed Russian tanks with their turrets blown off."

still didn't stop a Javelin
