yea dudes with recoil pads put em on there theyself.. never was issued one, and vaguely recall dudes putting rings of inner tubes on their stocks to "prevent slip" or some BS they read in Ranger Digest
 
We never had a recoil pad on any M4 Carbine ( or CAR15 for that matter) while I was in Army.

Same, never ever saw any, or even heard of any!
We ran a lot of "Old" M-16 A1 and early A2, CAR-15 and -16 Commando's, and the early M-4's
not a single one had anything but the hard plastic knurled butt, which if you had a new one, you butt stroked on the nearest chunk of cement a few times to take the roughness off of it!
My CAR -16 Commando had a hard Aluminum smooth butt, and it was by far my favorite to carry and use!
